Question Purging Coolant System

I have a 2009 Dodge RAM 3500 w/6.7L Cummins and I want to install a coolant system filter kit. In the Service Manual the refill procedures (shown below) call for removing the "vent fitting".

Can someone tell me where this "vent fitting" is as well as the two one-way check valves (jiggle pins) are located, possibly include a picture because they are not shown in the Service Manual.

FILLING - DIESEL ENGINE

Clean cooling system prior to refilling (Refer to 07 - Cooling - Standard Procedure) .

1. Close radiator drain plug.

CAUTION: All air must be purged from the 6.7L engine when refilling the cooling system. Failure to do so can cause EGR Cooler cracking which can lead to catastrophic engine and exhaust system damage.

2. 6.7L Only. Remove vent fitting.

NOTE: The diesel engine is equipped with two one-way check valves (jiggle pins). The check valves are used as a servicing feature and will vent air when the system is being filled. Water pressure (or flow) will hold the valves closed.

3. Using Tool 8195, fill the cooling system with coolant mixture (Refer to 07 - Cooling/Engine/COOLANT - Description) , 6.7L ONLY, fill system until coolant comes out of vent hole.

4. Install vent fitting. Tighten to 6 N·m (55 in. lbs.).

5. Using Tool 8195, fill coolant recovery container to the FULL mark.

6. Start and operate engine until thermostat opens. Upper radiator hose should be warm to touch.

7. Accelerate engine from idle to 2500 RPM five times. (throttle snaps)

8. Idle engine. Check coolant level in coolant recovery container. Fill to FULL line.

9. Repeat step 7.

10. Shut off engine. Fill coolant recovery container to FULL line.

11. Remove Tool 8195. Install radiator cap.

Thanks for the help.

Vent is right next to the egr cooler and it is labeled vent. Jiggle pins are located on the T-stat.

What type of coolant system filter kit are you going to install? Can you give me some details about how to? Thanks.

A vacuum filler is a great way to purge air as well. Probably not worth the cost if you seldom use it.

this is the one i have. works great! no more air locks or air trapped in egr cooler. however i don't have to worry about egr cooler damage do to trapped air as it fell off the truck LOL

Interesting tool. But I think I will just open the vent at the high point in the coolant line to the EGR cooler.

But the ability to check for vacuum leaks before filling is a nice option.

Hey Navy7797, I imagine nothing else. Unfortunately and fortunately, I don't fly them just fix/maintain them. But based on my experience, I had the privilege to take off and land a couple of times on the deck of USS ENTERPRISE, I am sure a real pilot would never feel acomplished unless he's launching or recovering on a carrier's flight deck.
