Pros and Cons for goin to 08 from 06

My buddy has a 06 dodge dually 4 door long box with an automatic transmission and 4x4 and he has recently bought it with 66,000 miles on it, and he is having problems with it already with u-joints, radiator hoses, and now transmission and he is wondering what would be the pros and cons from a 06 to an 08 besides the difference between the 5.9 and the 6.7 and exhaust break

o yeah i almost forgot, 08 dodge 2500 4 door short box 6 speed 4x4 w/exhaust break

Any information will help thx

Boy I must be blessed. Because I love my 6.7 even with the emision junk, and have had 2 reflashes and replaced 1 speaker after 23K. After reading all the posts on this forum it sounds like everyone is having major problems with their 6.7's. Go to the GM sites and they have just as many if not more problems with the D/A and 95% would buy a new lmm all over again. They seam to be much more positive about the D/A then the folk with the Dodge Cummins. The new 6 speed is awesome and the EB works great with the 6.7's. But maybe I just got a good one. Just my thoughts!

I am another of the "chosen" ones, as I have nearing 9000 miles on my '08 and she has performed flawlessly thusfar. That being said, were I in your buddies position, I would keep the '06. Being that he just bought the truck, unless he paid cash, he is going to take a hit on it especially if he repairs all the maintenance items before sale. And that is just what he is experiencing, maintenance items. The '08 u-joints are eventually going to fail as well.

All that aside, the 6-speed auto is supposedly awesome and the exhaust brake is awesome on the '08s. If he is not currently in the market for a new truck though, is that enough to justify the added expense? That is something for him to decide.

Ok what i was trying to say is that the u-joints are only 1 week old.....if even and they are already goin out, tranny is now jumping with out touching throttle, and he plans on doin a trade in and the dealer is willing to give im $400 less than what he paid for the 06 and the total difference is 12,999 for the 08 and in my opinion it is a good deal .

The truck cannot be blamed for U-Joints going bad after a week. That is a faulty universal joint or improper installation. Sounds like the transmission might have been beat on but it also might just be low on fluid. At any rate, it sounds like yours and his minds are already made up so if he has $13K to spend and wants a brand new rig go for it. I am not disappointed in the least with my '08. You may want to let him know that if he has any intentions on bombing the truck, the aftermarket for the 6.7L is still quite limited and dealerships are getting more and more **** about warranty work if the truck is the least bit modified. Just a heads up.

If he's not going to mod it, get the 08. Sounds like he's already leaning towards the 08 anyway.

I really am happy with my 08. I wonder why people even post about 5.9's on this forum? Who cares?

Another factor to consider is... what is the truck going to be used for? If he's going to be doing a lot of towing with it, then the 6.7 is the winner hands down. More power, exhaust brake, narrower power band make it the easy choice. If it's going to be driven empty the majority of the time or in the city a lot, then maybe putting some money in a tranny and good quality U-joints isn't such a bad thing. Having had no issues with my 6.7 after 60,000 miles, I'd tell him to go with the 08. Again... how it's going to be used would be the deciding factor.

many of us care. a few of us are even going back to them. I never though I'd see the day when I got rid of a new 07 for a used 06, but I did. it's almost like you are suggesting the 5.9 is obsolete with the introduction of the 6.7

not starting a brand war, but you don't see people trading their new Duramaxes and Powerstrokes (except for the rare 7.3) on older used versions?

I'll go out on a limb and suggest we'll still be talking about the CR 5.9 when a replacement is announced for the 6.7

Actually ive talked to quite a few people gowing from the LMM back to the LBZ and likewise with the powestroke. I have a friend who is getting sick of his 6.4 and is seriously considering going back to the 6.0 (obviously a ignorant ford lover)
