Power steering issue

So, I had this itty bitty leak at the pressure hose fitting on the PS pump. When I took the fitting off, out came a spring and a machined valve of some sort. I slapped it back in an low and behold no steering and no brakes. I went online to one of those on line mechanics. He tells me I have to replace the pump. Anyone had a similar story? We're you able to fix it without replacing what was a perfectly good pump?
