New OIL's anygood???
Hey guy's and Gal's, I know another oil thread! please read and comment if you can. I was on another forum (Don't know if I can say where) and they were talking about the new oil's, the kind for the PDF engines I think it was the CJ4 type not the CI4 or CI4+ (hope I'm right on this) but anyway the discussion was started by a mechanics son, the father is the head of a school dist bus maintanance shop.
They were saying they are seeing a large rise in oil failures in the Navastar and a few Cummins engines using these new oils... New Delo 400 I believe a CJ4 oil. long story short, They are moving forward And reverting back to a CI4or CI4+ Delo.
I just had my first oil change at the dealership (3000 miles) and they used a Mopar labled jug 15W40 CG-4/SH what kind of oil is this?? counter guy said Mobile 1 makes it?? Is this oil any good or should I keep looking?
My truck 07 CTD 5.9L Guess its the last of the non-DPF trucks.
Thank you,

Thank you,
Since you do not have a DPF on your truck, you are good to go with the CI or CI+ oils. In fact, many will say that because of the higher TBN (total base number), it is beneficial to run this oil as you go go to longer between drain intervals. The new CJ4 oils are backwards compatible, meaning they can be used in any CI or CI+ spec'd application.
I can't be certain, but it almost appears that they may have been using some fairly old oil in your engine. CG-4 has been out for many years now and the fact that it doesn't mention any newer specs would be cause to suspect this. Even while just sitting in the jug, the additive package in an oil can break down over an extended period of time, making it not as effective as it should be. Being that I'm driving the new 6.7L, I have no choice but to run the CJ4 oil. In your case, I would suggest CI or CI+.... while you can still get it. Soon there will be no choice and you will be forced to run the CJ4 formulation as the others get phased out. As has always been the case, the additive package in the newer oils will continue to improve with research and refinement.
