Hi everyone at Diesel truck resource. Iam new to this and computers so bear with me. I need a 4 wheel drive pu snow plow truck. My brother owns a 2005 ram 2500 2 wheel drive standard.I drive it often. I find it very hard to see over the hood past the wipers, the windshield is to low ,I see the wipers then 10 feet of road or the car in front of me.Iam looking at a 2008 ram 3500 4wheel drive Laramie mega cab 6.7L automatic.Wil this be a good snow plow truck. Is the 6.7L a good engine,is it maintaince free or does the 6.7 require a lot of maintaince.Does the 6.7 have a good long reputation for longingevity or do they require major parts and repair . Wil the automatic transmission strong enought known to last. Will the universal joints handle snow plowing. Is the 2008 6.7 ram mega 4 wheel drive a good truck. I will be glad to here all comments and help on buying a snow plow truck.thanks moonshot I hope I found everyone well and happy

Welcome.

For a snow plow truck, I wouldn't use a mega cab 6.7L. I'd look for something like your brother's truck. 2003-2007 2500 4x4 regular or quad cab long bed. 5.9L will hold up, the four speed auto may not (get a manual for better longevity). The front end and u-joints will wear out, so expect to replace them on a mid-to-high mileage truck.

Buying an older truck will give you more money for expected repairs (like ball and universal joints).

Look for a 2006 or early 2007 Megacab with the 5.9L

In 2007.5 they went to the 6.7L.
2006 was the first year for the megacab...

I've owned both the 4 speed (2007 and earlier) and the 6 speed (2007 and newer) automatics. I much prefer the 6 speed auto and feel it is durable under typical stock truck usage.

If you are transporting adults, then the mega cab is the way to go since there is much more room in the back. Light snow plow duty should not have an adverse impact on the trucks durability. The 2007s and 2008s had some issues with the turbos and sooting due to the new diesel particulate systems. These have been sorted out now and you should have no issue with a 2009 or newer truck. Before you get the 2008, have a look at the service record for that truck.

I assume your looking at a single rear wheel 3500. I'd stay away from a dually in the snow.
