Want to buy a newer truck was told the 6.7 came with an exhaust brake. What year did this start and do you like it or would you go with a Pac Brake or other?

Thanks

When I bought my used but now past 2007.5 6.7 it came with the exhaust brake. Sorry I can't help you out further. I just wish my now current truck had one.

The exhaust brake is a feature available on the 6.7 CTD and is not an aftermarket add on. It is part of the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) and programmed in the ECM by the OEM.

Parts that make it more adaptive than the aftermarket brakes are exhaust back pressure control where it has a sensor for exhaust manifold back pressure and varies the closing geometry of the turbo for the set braking pressure to the engine. Benefit here is full braking force at a wider RPM range. Also is the integration to the tow/haul mode were the brake function will initiate down shifts to maintain speeds under braking conditions as well as on deceleration to a stop. Both useful in hard braking conditions when towing or emergency stopping.

Added feature (especially for us in winter climates) is the warm feature for the engine where you can turn on the exhaust brake to aid in warming the engine at cold starts.

I find the brake extremely useful and use it all the time towing or empty around town.

So if you bought an aftermarket one would it work like the 6.7's?

If you go to the PacBrake website there is a model available that would work well and integrate with the 5.9 for automatics as well as standard transmissions.

PacBrake PRXB Brake.
