Ok guys and girls, how many miles before synthetic oil do you recommend on the 6.7? Never have used anything but dino oil on my other vehicles

thanks dodge man I have heard to wait until the rings kinda wear into the cylinders a little. I know there is a lot of variables because I do not tow a lot.

I did mine at 7000 miles and no problems, just do it. In fact I asked the same question at TDR when I was thinking of going synthetic at I'm giving the same advice I got . In fact I changed to synthetic almost 20k ago and no problems and I haven't towed at all.

You need to get enough miles on the truck to get the rings to seat or problems/aggravations will find you. I had about 22,000 on my truck before going 100% but do not tow heavy. Get the bugger working hard and you will be happier before switching.

I ran it in my Powerstroke and the engine started using 1qt every 1000 miles at around 60K. I ran it in my twin diesel boat and the starboard turbo bearing failed and the wheel hit the side of the case (real fun). Is it worth the extra money? Not to me! $3k for a turbo at 1100 hours was a hard pill to swallow.

thanks for the input, I just seem to be old school. When I haven't had any issues with standard oil. Also have heard to let the rings seat, I should probably pull about 12,000 pounds for the first 100,000 miles

Just make sure the synthetic is CJ rated.
But my thinking is the new CJ dino based oils are probably very near synthetic anyway, due to the reduction in the ash content in the oils.

Just like most said you want to wait for a while for the rings to seat. One mechanic said the other day that you need to wait 60000 miles before you swap over, so your engine is broke in. Every one is going to have different outcomes some may have problems some wont, do it at your own risk with low miles just be aware of what could happen. It would just be better to wait for more miles.

I switched to synthetic oil when it had 10,000 miles, first with Synthetic Rotella 5w40 and then Amsoil 5w30 HDD at 13,600. So far I've not used or lost any oil in between oil changes. But then I did do a twin 33+ hour non stop engine brake in when it only had 1500 miles on it.
