G56 Clutch

Ok it's clutch time.

Anyone out there do a clutch on a G56.

Need some instructions.

I disconnected the shifter, two bolts under the boot. Now does the shifter block have to come off too or will it clear the hole in the floor when I lower and slide it aft to clear the input shaft.

I don't think I have a output shaft plug large enough, so do I need to drain the trans fluid.

Any info will be welcome.

I had to get the whole shifter housing out for mine to clear. There wasn't enough room in that whole to slide the input shaft out of the old clutch.

You won't lose that much fluid, but even if you do, you can just pour more down the shifter housing to fill it. Depending on the mileage you have, it would be worth it to go ahead and change it out.

UNRULYNFS on here has done this many times(twice for clutch and once for tranny).

Don't forget that this clutch coming out is a different beast than most. It has a flexplate like an auto that the dual-friction flywheel bolts to like a convertor. Once you take the plate and disc off you'll have to take off the bolts holding the flywheel to that plate from the barring hole.

That thing is about 80lbs. of heavy too. The solid flywheel you're putting in will weigh less.

ALSO, once the plate bolts are out that flywheel will fall. I was able to hold it in place until I could contort back around to lower it. Hindsight= I would have had help at that point.

Then you can take out the crank bolts that hold the flexplate.

do yourself a favor and remove the "flexplate" bolts first and remove the transmission with the clutch still in it, just like you would do with a torque converter. I never separate the transfer case from the transmission but it's personal preference. If your trans jack is big enough it's just one less step. Other than that it's pretty easy, granted I've had mine out probably 15 times since 2005 so unfortunately I'm good at it.
