fuel treatment?
fuel treatment?
Do any of you guys run fuel additive in your 6.7's?
I will be picking up my new MEGA on Saturday and all the dealer said was make **** sure I use ULSD, but nothing about fuel additive.
I have several bottles of Power Service left from my 04.5, but haven't heard of anybody running any kind of additive in the new 6.7's. Is this a no no
or should I start with the first tank and pour it in?
What's you guys opinions?

I used to run it in my 12 valve but the manual says nothing needed on the 6.7 . You may get some differing opinions on this site but I think most guys aren't runnung any. I'm not going to add any.
There is also info out from Cummins and Dodge that says not to add any fuel additives unless they are approved by Cummins/Dodge as being "low ash" and approved for use in the 6.7. To my knowledge, there is nothing on the market yet that meets that requirement.
Apparently they put this restriction on fuel additives for the same reason they mandate CJ4 motor oil. The DPF system will burn up soot, but ash accumulates in the DPF and either plugs it up or requires it to be cleaned out. Ash can get into the DPF by using unapproved motor oil or fuel additives.

Along those lines of the "low ash", my dealer said I needed to use a low ash oil, preferably Rotella. He said it should say "LOW ASH" on the bottle.
I can't seem to find it anywhere so far.
I have 3 gallons of Rotella 15w40 also left over from the 04.5, but it does not say "LOW ASH" on the bottle anywhere.
Where are you guys buying your oil from and what brand is it? Also how many quarts does the new 6.7 hold? I only assume it will be more.

I know I could find this info in the manual, but I don't pick the truck up for a couple more days and was just wanting to get a jump on things.
Thanks again for the info on the fuel ???'s. Any other comments would be helpful.
Thanks for the replies, I was just wondering as I have alot of it left over. Guess I'll be giving it to my buddies that still have the 5.9.

Up here in Alberta, Delo 15W40 can be had for $13/gallon, so it is not any more expensive.
As for how much oil these rigs take, that is a topic of much discussion these days. The owner's manual says 12 quarts, but many have been reporting that this brings the level way above the 'safe' level on the dipstick. Nothing concrete has really been decided upon as of yet, but the best suggestion I believe would be to stick to what the manual says. I've been adding 11 quarts plus a quart or so for the filter. If you ever do have engine issues, they can't come back at you if you say you've been following the manual's instructions.

Coontz, I doubt you will find any oil out there that says "low ash" on it. Just look to see if it meets CJ4 standards. If it does or if it says "Cummins 200081 compliant" then it's OK to use in the 6.7
I'll double check with the dealer too, maybe I misunderstood..I do that often.
Coontz, you can get the oil directly from the dealer.
Mopar Maxpro 15W40 6700 diesel DPF. That's their recomened oil. About $20 list price per gallon. Talk to your parts guy, and he may cut you some slack on the cost.

15-40 delo low emissions?
I thought the newer 15-40 Delo "low emissions" oil was spec'ed for the 6.7. That is what I used for our first change at 3600 miles. Truck has been running great with it in there. No regen issues. I didn't look for the new specs on the jugs. Should I expect trouble?
Do not follow this advice.Cummins recommends VALVOLINE PREMIUM BLUE, it is the ONLY oil I have found to have the CUMMINS LOGO ON IT for Pete's sake! It meets CJ4 as well as the Cummins spec previously mentioned.
AND THE BEST PART is that you can get it at your auto parts store for about $10 PER GALLON. Save your money for fuel....
I went to Walmart last weekend and read the front & back labels on all of the major brand name diesel rated oils they carried, all different brands. Every single one (Delo, Valvoline, and many others) all carried the CJ4 certification. Many of them showed "CJ4" somewhere on the front of the container, but every single one says it on the back if you just look. Most of them also reference the Cummins 20081 certification too, but not all did.
What you do have to watch out for are the cut price or off brand oils that are 15W-40 and say "Heavy Duty, etc". Used to be you could use those in your diesel without too much risk. None of these were CJ4 rated. Note the Walmart brand diesel oil did not have CJ4 either.
Also watch out for buying name brand oil from someplace that doesn't move their inventory very quick. They may have the old non-CJ4 rated oil still on the shelf. But again, it's very easy to find CJ4 rated oil, many different brands at good prices, just look at the back of the container to confirm.

It says "MEETS API SERVICE CJ-4, CJ-4 PLUS, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4/SM, SL, SJ"
Under this it says:
Meets the performance requirements of:
ACEA E7
Caterpillar ECF-3, ECF-1
Cummins CES 20081
Detroit Diesel 93K218
Mack EO-0 Premium Plus 07
MAN M3275
Mercedes-Benz 228.3
Volvo VDS-4
Would this be OK or should I look elsewhere?
I thought it might but wanted to be for sure since someone said get rid of the Rotella.
What do you think?
Thanks....
Trucker...I'm sitting here looking at a gallon of Rotella T Heavy Duty SAE 15w40 that I bought by the case from Wally World.

Rotella CJ4 is out there too so it is fine to use Rotella... just be sure it's the new formulation. As someone pointed out previously, make sure to buy from someone who rotates their stock regularly, otherwise you could end up with old oil that doesn't meet the new specs.
