Well I am confused. After online and forum searches, I ordered a Fleetguard FS 43255 for my 2009 2500. It's a filter cartridge that would need to go in a canister. I somewhere, somehow, expected to see a canister cover like I had in the old 2001 Cummins. Today I got a closer look in the engine bay and now I'm not sure if I bought the right one.

So...do I unscrew from underneath the vehicle the whole canister that I see on the engine? Then does the new cartridge go inside this canister? Or am I supposed to have something else?

Can someone please point me to a fuel filter change help file for my 2009. I'm afraid I got mixed up looking at other 3rd gen year models.

 

You disconnect the water in fuel sensor/connector and then unscrew the bottom black housing from the top stationary. Inside the black plastic housing is a replaceable fuel filter element that you purchased.

I prefer to drop the driver side wheel liner and get access from the side...

 

I removed the wire harness connector at the fire wall. A flat blade screw driver releases the locks top and bottom then move it to the side. You can then disconnect the WIF sensor and with oil filter wrench remove filter. Remember you are above filter so rotate clockwise to remove. Remember to put some oil on the o-ring and wipe out housing with a lint free cloth or shop air.

 

Mega-Engr has it right, But the filter I am given when I go to cummins, rather than the dealer is FS43258. It has a 6 figure digram on the side of the box denoting exactly what Mega-Engr said. My factory service manual also says to pull the fender well cover. I don't know where you buy your fleetguard filters, but they are made by Cummins and you pay half what you pay at the dealer if you get it from them.

 

I get mine in a kit with some oil filters to span several services from Geno's Garage. Excellent tips Big Iron! Thank you.
