Fuel Filter

Hi, I'm a newbie here and to Diesel engines in trucks. I have a 2009 2500 6.7 Dodge Ram . I use it to pull a 5th wheel rv and it does a marvelous job and really love the Engine Brake. 14,000 miles and am still a happy camper however I was at the Dealership and had service, oil and filter change. While there the service guy asked mi mileage and I told him and he asked if I wanted to have the fuel filter changed as it is due at 15,000 I said yes. He comes back and said they have no fuel filters in stock so I plan to come back, that was 3 days ago and they still have none in stock and said they had never changed one. It is a large dealership been there 25 years or more.
They acted like it was no big deal. Should I be worried.

Chrysler has recently mandated that a new 5 micron filter system be installed in the 6.7L Dodge Cummins diesels. These new units are most likely not yet available for shipment to your dealership. This new system uses a replaceable filter element system, different from the screw on unit that was previously mandated. It shouldn't be long before they will be available at all dealerships as well as in the aftermarket stores.

Go to a fleetguard filter dealer, eg. cummins service centre and get the filter there, the price for this new upgraded filter system at a Dodge dealer will knock your socks off and is made by fleetguard. I'm sure it costs a lot to have someone take these out of the white box and put them in the blue and black ones.

First welcome to the forum and enjoy your truck.
You can also buy them on line at Geno's Garage. Here is the web site. http://www.genosgarage.com/default.asp
The part numbers are FS43257, this is the new filter and housing for the 5 Micron rated filter. You will need to buy this first then you can use the replaceable fuel cartridge, part number FS43258.
I change mine every 10K miles and carry a spare in the truck. I also buy my oil filters there also.

In reference to this new fuel filter setup... has anyone on here installed it and if so, is it any easier to drain than the previous system?

Fuel Filter

Thanks for all the replies.
Next question, How hard is it to change myself?
The owners manual makes it sound real easy. I guess the hard part would be getting the splash guard off to get to the filter.
Also is 15,ooo miles pretty much the life of the filter?
I have done all my own service on prior vehicles, but am not sure about the diesel mostly account of the amount of oil that is going to come out of the engine when draining I am use to dealing with 5 or 6 quarts and that oil sure is black, I can see a stain that will pretty much cover the garage floor forever.

Again thanks for the replies.

There's a good thread on here about it. The old style required a strap wrench to remove. The new style, which I picked up at my local dealer is removed with a ratchet and socket now. If your truck was built after Dec. '08 then yours will remove with a ratchet and socket. It should already be the new style.

I've changed mine several times and have never removed the inner fender liner. I just had my truck in for state inspection, and had the oil/filter and the fuel filter changed while it was in the shop. I supplied the filter...old style from Geno's...and the shop charged me one hour labor to put it on.

On a side note, I bought a number of oil and fuel filters from Geno's back when I bought my truck in '08. I think that they had a special on the fuel filters...think that I paid around $10 a piece. Now they're 5 times that.

Fuel filter

My truck is a 2009 2500 6.7l CTD quad cab
I took a good look at it with a drop cord light and it is not as you describe.
I is in a clear plastic container that screws in from the bottom I will try to get a picture tomorrow and post it here. The top is metal with no way to use a ratchet fron the top.
From what I have learn here on this site while lurking it seems that there has been a number of changes with this engine and its accessories about every 6 months.
I'll try to get a picture tomorrow.

The ratchet goes on from the bottom. It is under a metal housing. That is your fuel heater. You should see a twist valve just above a hose for draining, and a sensor plugged into the bottom.

Fuel filter

I called the Deaker and they got some fuel filters in, I just got back from having one put in. $30.00 for labor and $39.95 for filter.
I looked under hood when I picked it up and looks like they may have had a little mishap while changing it as there was water on left side of engine like the fuel might have sprayed a little when they opened it up.
I am glad I didn't try it to save $30.00.
I took a couple of pics but they didn't come out very good.

Wow. Glad I didn't get the 6.7! My filter is $15 and I unscrew the top, drop a new one in and go.

Just a piece of advice, buy yourself a filter and keep it somewhere in the truck. Read up on how to change it yourself, and what you need to keep with you to change it aswell.

It's worth $30 to have someone change it that knows how to. If your not careful you will be taking a shower in diesel fuel. I remove left front wheel and inner wheel well you have to remove all the 5/16 head screws first. I think there are 10 screws. Push in on wheel well to remove it from fender a little difficult if you have not done this before. Then remove WIF sensor connector by squeezing release tab and pulling down on connector. Then loosen filter and the drain valve so filter will drain some fuel out first into drain pan.. Then unscrew keeping filter upright when removing since filter holds about one quart of fuel. I wouldn't want to attemp this in my nice clean driveway. I do all this in five minutes, how long would it take you?
