Front end shimmy

Hello, DTR...

I have a question about some problems that I'm having with my front end and steering....

I have a 6" procomp lift that came from the dealer with 37" tires, and I've had a shimmy ever since I got the truck. I have had 1 alignment done, and the dealership has bought me new tires (the old ones were 'cupped'), and the lift has been adjusted and tightened.

Now that I have the new tires, it is a lot better, but around 45-55 mph, I still feel a left to right shimmy in the steering wheel.

Is this ball joints, or is my front end out of wack? The dealership is clueless on this, I can't do a lemon due to the fact that I bought the truck used.

Any help would be useful...

Thanks!

Take the showpony lift off, get some stock tires and your problems will be gone. Sounds like they have gone above and beyond for you considering a modded used vehicle.

Me and black are in on this together... I went with him when he bought the truck, and I made sure that they put the lift and tires in the deal for the warranty... they are mad at me now...

I was wondering if we put some MOOG's on there, if it would help? Or, if we took the camber all the way out to the edge of the specs.

I don't know enough about alignment and front ends/lifts to be helpful on this one.

there is a tsb or recall (not sure which) on the 07.5 to upgrade some front end stuff to the 08 equipment. I saw this in another thread on another site and they change out the steering daamper and some other things. Ask the dealer what that recall will do for ya

I had to have mine replaced, no recall or tsb, the knuckle on the passenger side connecting the rod off the steering box to the long rod was just worn out and causing some severe DW. The replacement parts came as a complete package with all the rods & tie-rod ends. Also had to replace the Rancho steering stabilizer with a Dodge one as the rod no longer comes with a hole for the stabilizer. The new rod has a clamp with a pin for the stabilizer. However the new stuff was much beefier than the stock equipment. Bigger rods & knuckles. Hopefully they will last longer.

madhat/Black Betty:

There is no camber adjustment on these trucks unless adjustable upper ball joints are on the truck. Does the truck have the stock stabilizer? Your shimmy could be just the large tires being felt through the steering system. It doesn't necessarily mean anything is broken or out of spec, just that these trucks weren't engineered with 37x13.50 tires in mind...lol

Before replacing the stabilizer, i would suggest a steering brace. BD makes one, Defiant, Lazarsmith, PSC, and a few others i can't remember offhand. This stabilizes the steering sector shaft and braces it to the frame. This greatly eliminated the left-right movement of my steering wheel when going over rough terrain. This would probably all but cure your issue but if, after installing the steering brace, you still feel a bit of movement in the steering wheel (as long as your ball joints and tie rods are in spec which i am sure your dealer has already investigated) perhaps you need a stiffer valved steering stabilizer. Hope this helps.
