Yes, I think a reflash is in order. I think the cat heater cleaner thing initiates at 55 mph. This is so that the heat does not melt anything, the air will cool it enough to not damage anything. They say that if the cat heater cleaner thing (sorry i can't remember the name) can melt asphalt if turned on while sitting still. As far as flames, i am not sure, but the heater in cat has the potential to throw flames.

aren't you a service writer or something?

one of the guys on here is, and you can tell because he posts FACTS that make sense.

if you are, then your post settles the arguement about IF it can.

and this explains WHY it can. the DPF is acting as a muffler, and to retain performance (air flow) the muffler is a straight through pipe, allowing flames (or a little POOF of flames as he later corrected) to come out the tail pipe

Murphy's Law of Trucks: If it can happen to your truck, and you paid a lot of money for your Truck, it WILL happen to your truck.

my buddy is a big truck mechanic, and he said the DPF cycle was melting asphalt on them

Anyhow, that's my $.02. I'll shutup now and let the flames fly
Thanks! I'm not here to make anyone mad, or make money, or anything like that. Just want more information so I can understand more what is happening with the emission systems on these things. I've read until I am blue in the face, but without real world info all the tech facts are just mumbo jumbo! Like I said, I'm thinking out loud in a way, by posting what I am thinking, not trying to give anyone in particular a hard time.

I have to agree with vzdude on this subject, I have to see it to believe it, is it possible for this to happen on a dodge, Maybe just because I didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen, but as a mechanic and looking at the theroy and the operation of the exhaust system I'm leaning towards no, But I'll be the first to admit I was wrong when proven. This is really good discussion and it has me now wondering about the soot stain on the BOTTOM of my tail pipe that occured before my flash looked like something was running out the tailpipe.

The Fords were a lot closer to the outlet of the tail pipe if I remember and also had a separate injector.
He didn't say the flame was 5 feet long inside the pipe. All it would take is a very hot rich mixture arriving at the end of the tail pipe. It would flash from the available atmospheric oxgen as it left the pipe.

It's hard to imagine how there would not be an excess of oxygen in the diesel exhaust unless the EGR was letting in enough exhaust to prevent a complete burn in the DPF or cat.

Hmmm. Sounds plausible to me. Super heated rich mixture with too much EGR. That's not so hard to believe in a 6.7, especially since he said it was happening and just asked why.

Thanks for the update. I've heard that Dodge is going to put those particulate filters on restriction due to too many dealers replacing them uneccessarily. They will have to contact STAR to get the part ordered. A real pain you know where because they make you jump through their hoops, but at least they/you know it needed replaced after all the extra steps.
