you might have some oil blow out if they put the oil up to the full line instead of the half way mark. oil change place did that the first time on my 03 put 12 qts cuz the book said so, only works if complety dry. as far as the black color havent known a diesel yet that the oil wasnt black. a little drip is no biggie if it gets bigger then theirs a problem, check the oil filter its been loose on mine before

If oil does not get black I would be worried about the quality of the oil I was using , it's job is to encapsulate the dirt . Oil that stays clean is not doing its job , no mater what oil you use there will still be soot getting past the rings and if it is not being pick up and run through the filter it stays in the engine .

Thanks for all the great answers from everyone. Now I can figure away to keep the drips off the driveway.

First oil change should probably be within the first 5,000 miles and after the 2nd oil change along those intervals go ahead and start pushing out there. I say that and I change mine every 5,000 period as long as I'm running dino oil, I'll move it out there aways when I switch to synthetic. And my dealership the last time charged me $129, so I've been changing mine since.

After every oil change in my 2006 the oil is black with in 2-3 minutes after it has been changed. I'm told that its due to the 3rd injecton event on all 2006 & newer engines.

Both my 04.5 and my 06 oil turned black instantly. They all do it and if mine didn't I would wonder why.

Okay guys, I just got my first diesel two weeks ago. I'm going crazy getting used to diesel. It is a 2001 5.9 turbo cummins 2500. Oil changes (I've been told every 3000 miles) engine has 122,000. Oil filter NAPA (wix), fleetguard, or K&N.? Fuel filter- Mopar, NAPA, What? I drive stop and go in Seattle but pull a boat on nice days. I need your help. Please. Oh yeah, this fuel additive question. Is it really necessary? What type of additive if it is?
How often? By the way this truck turns 765 Ft of torque and 385hp on the dyno. Runs great.

What ever you buy do not use or put FRAM anything on your truck as they make crap every thing when it comes to a diesel engine. Fleet Guard, Napa/Wix, Pureolater, AC Delco, Amsoil and even Motorcraft filters are Ok to use on your diesel. Don't know if K&N will hold up to your CTD and it cost $$ so I don't buy them. You should be able to go up to 7500 miles on an oil change even in Seattle traffic with good quality oil. If you want you can do an OA and see how much farther you can go and most only charge about $20 for it and it only takes a few days to get the report back to you.

As for fuel additive no its not required but a Qt of 2 cycle outboard oil in the tank sure will help to lube back in to the fuel (& helps the fule system) that ULSD lacks. Many use an additive as some have anti gel in it to keep the fuel from geling between 20 above and all the way down to -40 below zero. Oh some also have a centane boster, this is the same as octane boster in gas but made for diesel fuel.
