EGR unplugging???

Traded in my 05 for a new 2008 3500 with the 6.7. The 05 was a work horse with 175,000 plus miles. Started up every morning no proplem. Lately it has had a rough idle, Po628 code, I need a new clutch and six new tires , decided to trade it in. Question on the new 6.7. Unplug the EGR now and get the delete kits. Wait till the "Service Truck" "Exhaust Filter Full" comes on and then unplug. Do nothing truck will run fine(built date 8/07)

run it until it needs something changed. then it's mod time.
my 08 is almost a year old with over 18,000 miles on it with a mix of driving.
had a couple of cels while in az, fuel wasn't ultra low sulfur. a couple tanks of ultra low and cel went away.

I would just unplug the EGR for now.
If it works the same as most others you will have fewer regenerations and better MPG. It is easy and simple and costs nothing. You will have live with a check engine light.
If it does not work right just plug it back in.

The built date on the truck is 8/07, what kind of updates on the ECM is on there if any??? Is there a more than 50% chance the CEL light would come on??? When you say not run right, how would the truck react(rough idle, stumbling, etc.)??? So that's it just unplug, nothing else need be done??? Down time is not an option for this truck!!!

Give your truck some time, at least 2,000 miles before you start re-engineering a pretty good running rig. Good luck.

. How bout it coolbreeze. look like we might be in the same boat. I've got 720 miles on the OD. That's what I"ve been thinking give it some time before messing with it. The thing is it's my work truck, and if I wait for the system to plug up I will have to take it in to get desooted, any time down is money lost on this rig. How is yours doing???

untouched truck

I have not modified my truck at all. I use the high idle anytime I will be idling longer than a few minutes. I have almost 40000 miles on my truck. It has only been to the dealer for the high idle enable. I usually get around 22 on the highway and about 17 to almost 18 while towing. Knock on wood I have not had one problem with this truck except for the urge to drive the h e l l out of it. When and if it does go to south side, turbo problems or exhaust dpf problems then I will modify the truck. Until then I won't mess with somehting that is working great.

About 9,500 miles on mine and it runs great stock. Not saying I won't mess with it, but no need to yet.

im sorry but there no way your getting 18mpg towing.. maybe on the overhead and not hand calculated. and maybe if your calling towing as in hauling a lawn mower or 4 wheeler around

don't really care what you think. It is hand calculated and I tow about 12000 lbs and get that mileage. I never travel over 55 miles an hour and my tow is completely flat. If you can keep your foot out of it and run smooth you can get that out the truck.

I just got my 08 3500 and when I drove home with it I got less than 13mpg and was use to getting about 21 on my 01 2500. Put about 200 miles on it and unpluged the EGR and mileage jumped to about 17 on freeway driving. I have 600 miles on it now and mileage is about the same. Yesterday I hooked up my 5th wheel and drove about 20 miles and the best I got was 9.7 MPG. Weight of the 5er is 13000 give or take a few lbs. All these figures are from the overhead. Waiting to take a longer trip to hand figure. It would be nice to get 17 or 18 towing my trailer but I don't think that will ever happen. I'm still happy with the truck.

Didn't waste no time unplugging the EGR. How's the truck running. What do you see as the long term effects of the EGR unplugging??What was the built date on your truck. Do you have the latest flashes???

I agree with 38short, unplug it now. But make sure the butterfly is either removed or defaults to the open position. If it is an 08 it should default to open so you don't need to remove it. You will get much better fuel economy,( just don't believe the Lie-O-Meter, and you will keep your oil MUCH cleaner!!

EGR Unplugging

Some of you have read my other post and know I am conservative in what I do and do not do to my truck. I have post in another thread that I started that my truck has thrown three CEL'S in the last week, but they are not permanently on. The CEL will be on for a day or so then turn off when sitting over night. I Took the truck to the dealer on Friday 21 Nov to have the codes read and cleared. I found out I have the dreaded P2262, so the Turbo will be drilled and clean soon. The dealer has ordered the parts and will let me know when to bring the truck in for service. When the work is completed I am unplugging the EGR circuit and will use a code reader to clear the codes. From what I understand this contributes the most to the turbo sooting problem. I do drive with the exhaust brake on have done so from the first day I bought the truck. I try to get out once a week and drive over 50 MPH to heat up the DPF and to burn off the soot, but this did not help the Turbo. The truck has 13,300 miles on the OD. I have read with interest all of the post on this site and the other Dodge forum sites and I have come to the conclusion to just unplug for now. My son who has own three diesels since 2001 a ford, chevy and 2006 Dodge Cummins has a side business repairing them. He and his partners are taking apart a 2006 Chevy Duramax with blown head gaskets. This engine has an EGR system in it and he has stated he has never seen an engine so dirty as this one. Soot is all over and he says this is from the EGR system. So I am unplugging and will be my own warranty shop.
