My "Water in Fuel" light comes on when I turn the key. It chimes five times and then goes out. According to the manual when this happens it's time to drain the water in the filter. I did this today according to the manual but when I drained it less less than a half of an ounce of liquid drained. I wasn't sure if it was water or fuel. It was somewhat clear but it smelled like fuel.

It was somewhat of a messy task. I had to losen the plastic drain valve amoust entirely before I had liquid coming out and then it started leaking at the top. I completed the task after only draining a half of an ounce. I fired the engine back up an I still have the same problem. Given I'm a first time diesel owner I'm not sure how much water to expect when I drain it. Can anyone give me an idea of how much liquid to expect? Also, is this going to be a fairly common task? I only 6k miles on the rig? I should note that I did buy 15 gal. of fuel from a back-country location. I was leary of the fuel so I only bought enough to get me back to civilization. I'd appreciate any insight you may have.

I found that I had to loosen the drain valve a couple of turns and then turn the ignition on (but don't start) for a few seconds. I used a mason jar to catch the drain off.

I would make sure to get it all cleared out for sure!! $18,000 for a whole new injection system, $1,800 a pop for the injectors. The water got in my tank because of were the flatbed drained right on top of a tank vent that needs a hose on it, my dealer and I are still working this one out.

I do not know if this is any different than my 2004.5. Not sure what year vehicle Myguy 98 is talking about. On my stock filter housing there is a yellow lever on the front of the housing that needs to be opened. By moving the yellow lever the filter housing is drained out the tube shown with the mason jar. Are you saying you are loosening the beige fitting shown in the picture to empty the filter housing?

I added 5/8 heater hose directly over the clear tube long enough to reach my front bumper and secured it with wire ties. I keep the hose up inside the front bumper when not being used. When I need to change filter the hose reaches pan/bottle set on the ground and makes for an easy job.

Could the water sensor be bad and giving you a false reading of water in the fuel? I have never had that warning since purchasing the truck.

 

Not sure what year your talking but on my 05 I believe the manual says that the light will stay on if there is water in the fuel, not chime and go off. I'm thinking the chime is unrelated and the light is only coming on as a test. If you use a clear container you can easily see the water and fuel separated, water will be on the bottom. The few times I've done mine have only seen about a teaspoon or less.

 

my light never tested itself at key on until i had the latest flash. Now it comes on (bulb test) whenever i turn the ignition on.

 

Riddler....It's interesting that you should mention the re-flash. I had the AU flash completed last week and that's when I noticd my light coming on. Do you get the "5 chimes" as described in the owners manual when you turn the key on?

 

at the moment, i could not tell you about the chimes. I dont believe i hear them, but i will make sure and listen when i get in the truck later today.

 

My truck chimes when i first start it up as well as the the bulb check for the WIF light. remembered to listen for it when i went on lunch.

 

Riddler.....thanks for checking that out. Note page 431 in the owners manual....it's the source of my confusion. They do a poor job describing the issue. I believe what we are hearing is normal but it is contradictory in the owner's manual. Wierd?

 

I confirm that I also hear the chimes and observe the WIF light for a few seconds. WIF light just started after latest flash.

Yeah, manual is confusing (or just plain wrong now).

 

I have to think the manual is wrong.....or so poorly written that it doesn't cover the 5-chimes. I can't remember before the AU flash how many chimes there were? I would think if there was WIF that the light would stay on instead of going right off?

 

I also noticed the WIF light only after the AU flash. Haven't had it come on due to water in fuel with 13,000 miles so far.
