Ahh yes the oh so common out of state sales tax unless unless its going to be used for buisness. It will actually be tagged in Kansas. My dads buisness is based in in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado. So it will be in Kansas quite a bit so im just gonna tag it there until i can actully open up a branch of his Storage Container buisness in souther cali. That will be about a year though based on the Permit Applications and Building Perimit Applications that could take up to two years. They were telling me more along the lines of a year But thank you for looking that up. I was told that my 07 from Kansas would not be difficult to tag in california since it passes the emmisions. They wernt doing the Smog Check yet. The only thing i was going to have to change was i would have to pull my front window tint off the front windows before i get it inspected but then i would just get them retinted. But the 08 will be in kansas

well i did find out from the CA DMV that after i own it a year i wont have to pay any sales tax but the weight tax is 385.00 for the 7-8000lb range and that will put me at about 685.00 first year and maybe 650.00 after that. the taco should be less than 200.00 first year and less after that. oh well its only money right? i paid 750.00 this year here in Colorado for the ram but it does go down while Cali will stay at about 650.00 permanently. i guess i will have to help pay for the nice weather. at least my insurance will stay the same.

in summery Cali definitely does not seem to like its residents very much or at the least thinks we all get 20 million for 3 months work making movies. but all states have there downfalls. Cali will be great when i get there i will just have to resign my self to knowing that i will be very broke when i die!

My brand new '07 was $462 in DMV fees. Wt was #6412. Sales tax is where Ca kills us! The inspection consists of checking vin. plate to make sure it is riveted on and making sure all paperwork matches up. Ca certified sticker must be on all Ca vehicles unless it has 7500 miles on it.

Just wait until your truck is a year old before registering in this State otherwise they'll try to hit you up for sales tax. After that it's no big deal.

Hey Danderson! is your truck a 2wd short bed?? mine is way over 7k lwb 4wd. Cali has some weird regs. they would even want the Tacoma weighed because it is a pickup. how the hell much could i possibly tow or haul with a reg cab 4 banger taco?? it can barely move with just me in it!

pt, i will definitely wait till the year is up. I'm glad i looked into this stuff before hand. big dollar surprises don't sit well with me!!

californiacation

well i could be wrong im just going by what the DMV lady was telling me. she said there was a few first year fees that drop off but did not say anything about the fee based on weight changing over time. thats why i kind of hijacked this thread (sorry DodgeDemon) Cali is a complicated and expensive place and i just want to be as ready as i can be when i get there. so any help understanding how it works would be great.

does it matter where you live as far as fees??

It shouldn't matter where you live in the state, except when you pay local sales taxes.

The weight issue is bringing back some memories. IIRC, when I went to get a certified weight certificate (required cause I bought it 'used' from out-of-state) the weight on the cert was 1,000# light. Weighmaster said something like, "Oh, well. Go take it to the DMV anyway". So I did. If I knew any better, I'd of dropped off a fifth or two.

I don't think the weight fee changes at all, but the licensing fee goes down 10% every year for 4 or 5 yrs then stays there for good. It is kind of a complicated mess, just like everything else politically driven in this state.

I used to have a handout that explained how all the fees were calculated, but I don't know what happened to it.

Out washing the truck this morning, thinking about this, I might have to toss in the BS flag on myself, not sure. I just checked the registration and it say 7160#. If anyone dropped a 1000# from the reg it was the ditz at the DMV as a cert of weight can't be messed with IIRC. Is 7160 about right or is it low?
