Breakin before heavy towing
Breakin before heavy towing
I have been told by the dealer (I just ordered a new 2008 Ram 5500) that pulling weight should begin immediately to increase fuel mileage. This is a 6.7 CTD with the 6 speed auto. My 2006 needed 500 miles before towing. Anyone have comments?
After the first 500 miles to allow the rear gears to mesh load it up and run it non stop for as long as you can. My wife and I drove mine with a load in the bed for 33 hr's non stop except to get fuel from IA to OR and then 5 days later we did the same on our return trip home so as to get it broke. A Cummins engine can run 24/7 at 2700 RPM's and not hurt it at all. When I drove OTR we would take a new or rebuilt engine in a semi and load it up to 80,000 Lbs and drive it non stop except to get fuel for 36 hours in the Mountains to get the engine broke in and I think it's the best way to break in a diesel engine. Anyway the dealer did give you good info to brake in your engine properly, so once you get it and put the first 500 miles on it, hook it to a load or load some weight in the bed and run it long and hard. Also you may want to change the factory oil around 2000-2500 miles as that it what many report that is all its good for before the change oil light comes on. Enjoy your new truck once it arrives.
