Axle difference on 3/4 and 1 ton
I have a 2007 one ton, srw, 6.7 litre and six speed auto. My rear axle capacity is 6200 lbs.
My bud has a 2007 3/4 ton, srw, 5.9 litre and four speed auto. His rear axle capacity is 6010 lbs.
I would have thought that between a 3/4 and one ton that there might be more of a spread on the axle weight ratings.
Can someone tell me what we have for axles (Dana what?) and is the 1 ton axle actually much heavier duty than the 3/4 ton axle?
It's all to do with fifth wheel trailers and what truck should be used to haul them. By all rights, if a guy has airbags, where's the advantage to having the 1 ton over the 3/4 ton, other than maybe bigger brakes and an actual OEM certification for the rated weight the truck can haul?

The way it's been explained to me, the only difference between the 1T and the 3/4T axle capacities is the addition of overload springs on the 1T. Everything else (pumpkin, axles, brakes, etc.) is all identical.
Someone else should be chiming in here to keep me honest, but that's my understanding...

You and you're buddy have the exact same axle. The difference in ratings has to do with the engines. If you both had a 5.9L or 6.7L the axle ratings would be identical. Dodge upped the weight ratings a few hundred pounds with the 6.7L trucks, probably due to the additional weight.
If I'm not mistaken the only weight rating that differs between the 2500 and 3500 configured the same in the same model year is the GVWR.

The reason the axle weight ratings are real close to the same is TIRES!!!! The tires can't hold anymore weight then what it is rated for. Same axle but the 3500 has the overload springs. That's it.
No, the real reason for the different axles ratings is the alignment of mars and jupiter...are you confused yet? I am. I heard if you have the same motors, the only difference is the extra leaf spring on the 1 ton.
