anti spin? why bother

just bought a 2008 quad 4x4 diesel auto with anti spin rear axle. this morning coming up a dirt road one rear tire on the ice and one in the gravel, trucks comes to a stop. tire on the ice is spinning away. is this what i get for almost a $400 option? what do you guys recommend, take it back or let it go. both rear tires pull in dirt and gravel but not ice.

It is a limited slip diff, not a locker. If there is no traction (i.e. ice) then one wheel will spin as you experienced. You may be able to use the brake to get some drag on the spinning wheel and get power to the wheel with traction.

I wouldn't take it back, it's most likely not broke or malfunctioning. Like Sabersix said, it's a limited slip, not a locker. It'll never achieve true lockup of both axle shafts. Try the brake thing. I've gotten out of some not-too-bad-stucks by putting the parking brake on a few clicks.

I agree that very expensive for very little lock up. Mine has done the same thing. I wish they had a switch that you could lock the rear.

Do a search, but I think that you need to apply the foot brake in order to transfer the power and activiate the Limited Slip. It does not react like a Chevy......

I was looking at a Power Wagon-it has options for full locking front & rear diff's. I'm not sure if they are electric or air-but are still available.

Mine has seemed to work better with time???
100k on the clock. Alittle e-brake action will engage it, but that is kinda dangerous when driving!!! I just apply more go pedal. As far as plowing goes it works wonderful. Go figure.

I did some searching and the only thing I could find in the aftermarket for the 11.5AAM axle was two limited slips, one being the posi-trac that chevy uses. I don't know if the locker the power wagon uses just hasn't been released to the aftermarket yet, or mabye it uses a different rear axle because it's gas and not diesel?? Anybody else have more info?

The power wagon has a different axle in it than a truck with a cummins. It is smaller.

If you want it more aggressive drain your gear oil, and replace it. But DON"T add friction modifier. This will greatly improve grip on the clutches, and you'll come back saying your rear end chatters (the one in the truck, the other one can't be fixed). If it bugs you too much, put in Friction Modifier a little at a time, and do figure 8's in a parking lot...once the rear end feels like its not chattering too much your good too go.

Need95,

We don't have packs / clutches / or friction modifiers in these units. Your statment would be appropriate for Chevys though.........

Limited slip funtion is automatic....applying some brake resistance can aid in the torque transmission of the diff but it will not activate it.
