Aluminum driveshaft damaged..

Hi anybody have any ideas or experience with this, i have an 07 dodge mega cab 3500 CTD , i have a vibration coming from my drive shaft, there is visible damage from a rock, what i am wondering does anyone know if i should be looking at an alternative to the aluminum replacement, dodge wants 650.00 plus install to replace this. I have only 29 k on this truck and cant believe a rock woulda damaged this, since my 99 i sold had 450K never had an issue, has something changed? i am wondering if this driveshaft on my 07.5 is durable enough or is there something better, i have a 4" lift also with 35" M/T. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I live up here in Western Canada.

If there is visible damage keep an eye on it.

I had a bad experience with a chevy s-10 that had an aluminum driveshaft this summer (I know apples to oranges), whacked it on a good sized rock and it almost instantly split in half and I had to drive 45miles back to town in 4wd after removing what was left of the rear driveshaft.

I'm sure a local drive line shop could build you a new one to your specs.

put the rear axle on jackstands the tires are off the ground, block the front tires, put the truck in 1st and watch the driveshaft spin to see if it is out of round. if it is just a dent, you should be able to fill it in with weld and grind it smooth.

That would throw the balance way out of whack.

Leave it, unless its out of round, or not straight. Don't weld anything on it, or fill it in.

There shouldn't be a vibration unless you knocked off a weight or beat the shaft so its not straight anymore. Even the new 4500/5500 have Double Swaged end aluminum shafts, and they last a long time. If you think its bad, replace it, once they're bent they can't be straightened.

Alot of Dmax's have alum driveshafts, at least the 4dr short beds do. I would think all the regular cabs do also.

as cumminsforlife stated, go to a local driveline/driveshaft place and have them build you one. It will save you a ton of money and you will have a stronger shaft as well. Most trucks heavy or light duty will have a aluminum shaft these days.

Have you people looked at the size of the driveshaft on the 6.7 trucks? It's huge! Must be 6" in diameter. I can see why they cost so much.

True, they are huge. I think they're made from 6061 which is aircraft grade aluminum. I still see the ink stamping on the tube.

Repair might be covered under your truck's comprehensive insurance. If you're lucky it will be $0 deductible.

I have heard of putting the truck up on stands and placing a small weight on the shaft held on by a zip tie and moving it until balanced and then permanently mounting it with good adhesive . Of course if the shaft is bent to far this will not work , in which case I would go with custom made instead of Dodge .

I was under my dad's '08 Mega cab adding some nerf bars and noticed the aluminum shaft, what really surprised me was that it was a 1 piece shaft. On my '06 crew cab long bed the shaft is a 2 piece with a carrier bearing. And being built on the same chassis I was surprised they went to a 1 piece being that it is rather long.

3 steps to make the truck not look like crap.

1.Grab some scotch brite and scuff drive shaft.

2.Grab some semi gloss black rustolem paint and spray the shaft.

3.Climb out from under the truck and admire a truck that does not look like
crap anymore.
