Alternator issues

My 2008 Dodge ram 2500 the alternator will charge then not charge and go back and forth notice it more just after being started. But I believe it has done it going down the road. Do I have a bad alternator, or is there some where else I should start looking?
Thanks

Did some more research, it sounds like the grid heaters kicking on. The only reason I researched this, was before hand there was a large squeal that went away in the vicinity of the alternator, and thought I could have had alternator issues, but didn't want to go out and buy and alternator to find out that it wasn't the problem...
