68RFE Tranny Issues

68 RFE Issue
Towed 9500# 450 miles one way. Truck pulled great no problems tranny acted like a champ. When returned to house found ATF on slab under truck. (Found small leak in sealant Dodge recommends for their tranny pans) Truck has 42k miles and bought the truck for the GREAT offer 100k powertrain that Dodge was advertising for their HD Trucks. Found out that it does not apply to the diesel trannys just the engine and engine componets. This was stated to myself by 3 dealerships. Long story short dealer wanted 280.00 USD to repair. Bought filter items external/ sump but did not go with the sealant to use on the tranny pan. Insted went with a gasket. I know that it uses 6 qts ATF-4. But when i had checked the level was still around add marking. Can someone comment on if i will need to place more ATF-4 or not. Do not want to over fill/ blow seal. Also has anyone used the gasket type. Input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

When I serviced the trans on mine, I was surprised that there was no gasket. Used high temp formagasket and have not had any leaks so far, but will get a gasket for it next time. Don't like the idea of sealer oozing into my transmission, filter or not. Would like to find a reusable gasket like the one I had for my 48RE. If I remember correctly, it took more than 6 quarts to bring mine up to the line. I added a half qt. twice to fill. Hope this helps.

tranny

I have the same tranny and have used the sealant 2 times no problem. You must clean all the old stuff off and wipe down both surfaces with carb cleaner or laqure thinner , something that dries fast and clean. I use a 1/8 bead of sealer that I get from the dealer . As for the amount of ATF+4 it takes more than 6 qts. Make sure you get the stick all the way in when checking and fill it till its full , depending on tranny temp.
You have to trust the dip stick or you'll never be sure of what you have.
I've got 90k on mine with no troubles. Sucking some AFT out the filler tube sure saves a mess when dropping the pan.. There's 2 filters under the pan a spin-on and the standard looking one, I change them at every fluid change. Good luck.

My truck has 153,000 miles on it now. No issues with the trans.
The filters have been changed every 50,000 miles. I pull as many liters as I can out of the dip tube at every 25,000 miles and replace. The trans has only received two complete flushes and since those I have been cautioned on doing that as often as I was. The two reasons I was told [not by the same person] was its a waste of time to flush so often and the other reason was that flushing is not always a good idea on a trans with some miles on it. So if I knew why that/those are a caution, I would tell you but I never got a straight answer.

Next time I do the filters I will be putting a Mag-Hytec or similar pan on the trans.
I am also adding the over sized diff covers on their next service too.

This trans is by far the best I have had in a Dodge with an automatic.

I second this that this tranny is the best Dodge has put out. Just got back from the mountains and it worked like a charm. Always in the right gear and the engine brake was amazing.
