6.7L/68rfe/350hp driving impressions!
I can’t really compare the two transmissions! But I just got my 2007 cab & chassis last week, let my buddy Jack drive it, he has a 2000 Dodge with the 5.9L and auto, which auto I have no idea. Jack was just floored at the performance of my truck, fell in love with the Aisin transmission, and the tow / haul, then totally shocked at the exhaust brake.
I only have about 330-miles on my truck, just been driving it around locally. As Jack I’m totally floored at how much better this new Dodge is over my X F-550
, head and shoulders above it!
Still waiting on a delivery schedule for my aluminum flatbed! I’m in the process of building the hitch for it now, put the first coat of black on this morning; here are some pictures of it. Next project will be to build the frame, and mounting bracket for the under body tool box, then figure out how I’m going to mount the spare tire.

I have spent a lot of time in the 6.7/Aisin combo's and it is a little different. With the 68rfe in tow/haul mode it does not automatically downshift for you, you have to manually downshift it with the gear selector switch on the gear shift. The 68rfe will run in 6th gear in Tow/Haul, the Aisin will not. The Aisin doesn't have the manual shift option, but it does shift down on its own in tow haul. Feels to me like the engine brake works just a little better on the Aisin, it feels like it wants to hold back a little harder. Both of them are great transmissions.
What is the difference between the two trannys? Are they both 6 speeds? Is one for the chassis cabs? I have a 3500 MC, 4x4, Single rear wheel, 6.7, Auto coming. Which tranny will that have? Finally, which one did you drive?
You will have the Dodge 68RFE. The Aisin is only available in the C & C
I've read a couple of posts on this forum where some folks that have driven both trucks think the 5.9/48RE is faster empty than the 6.7/68RFE.
Luke - do you get that impression? I'm wondering if the two extra gears make the 6.7 FEEL slower 'cuz the truck isn't revving as high at it's shift points ?
Personally I only have about 30 miles of driving a 5.9/48RE combo, and it did feel slightly less powerful than mine, but it sure was nice driving it in rush hour traffic :-)
Just wondering...

I think some feel the 5.9 is faster because you feel the boost come on hard at about 1600-2000 rpms and then your gone. With the 6.7's VGT it builds boost instantly, there is no delay. And the torque curve is so flat and long you never feel that rush. I have probably put more than 100,000 miles on 5.9/48re's and I'll tell you these new 6.7's/68rfes and 6.7/Aisin's are superior in about every way I've seen so far to the old combo. Stock truck to stock truck the 6.7/6-speed autos win hands down, in performance.
Now, keep in mind that a lot of the guys who go test drive these brand new tight and not broken in 6.7's are driving 5.9's that have a bunch of miles and are loosened up. It is possible that comparing them that way the 5.9 might feel like it has some more umph. I am comparing brand new left over 5.9's to brand new 6.7's.
Does anybody know when you can build & price a mega cab with the 6.7 & 6spd auto on dodge's website? You can build a reg cab & quad cab with the 6.7/6spd combo, but mega's only give you the 5.9/4spd combo. I plan on ordering a 2500 2wd mega soon & would like to how much msrp is gonna be. Luke, thanks for the info on the driving impressions. I test drove a 5.9,4spd mega & it ran real good. I didn't think the drive train could get any better but I'm glad to here they run great. I just hope the EGR systems don't give much problems like they do in the 6.0 powerjokes. Thanks again for the info
Up to 23,000lbs on the pick-ups. 24,000lbs on the 3500 C&C, 26,000 on the 4500/5500 C&C. They 68rfe is available with either 3.73's or 4.10's. Even with the 4.10's you can still run 70 mph at just around 2,000 rpms, with the 3.73's 70 mph comes in at about 1,775 rpms, whcih should help out on fuel economy.
