According to the guys at Jefferson State Diesel the 6.7 gets terrible fuel mileage compared to the 5.9. I was also told at the dealership that the 5.9 is a much better engine. If your looking for a good deal on a new one go to Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg, ID. I got my truck for $34K OTD, when the local dealership wanted $48K. I also heard there is a big Dodge dealership in Florida like Dave Smith and they give smokin deals as well. It would be a little closer for you. If you decide to go with Dave Smith you'll fly into Spokane, WA and they will pick you up and take you to the dealership 70Mi away. I was the 60th person they picked up from the airport that day. Hope this helps!

I recently purchased a 2007.5 6.7L. I am currently getting 16.5 mpg during mostly in town driving (no highway trips over 10 miles). I got about 16.7-17.5 on average with my 2004 in the same driving conditions. Granted, the 2004 was heavier (3500) but it was also completely emissions equipment free. I expect to get 16-18 mpg around town and 19.5-21 mpg highway when all my emissions junk is stolen by a complete stranger. I would like to see some evidence backing the claim that the 5.9 is a "much" better motor. They are very similar, although the 5.9 is maybe a tad more efficient. The 6.7L sure does have some grunt !

Not sure thats just what I was told when I told them that I thought about holding for the 6.7. They both said I made a wise choice getting the 5.9. Sounds like your getting better MPG's than other 6.7 owners who were only getting 13-15MPG on the HWY. I get 19-19.6 MPG in town and 21-23 MPG on the Hwy depending if I drive 65, 70, or 75MPH.

I just picked up my new 2010 Ram 3500 SRW CrewCab a few days ago and put my first full tank of diesel through it. The truck only has about 750 miles on it and driving 90% highway and 10% city, I got 17.7mpg hand calculated driving 74 mph into a 30mph side wind. I thought that was pretty good considering it's a brand new truck and hasn't gotten any miles on it. My 06 2500 MegaCab averaged about 18 mpg highway if I kept it at 68mph and that's with 30k miles on it. Both trucks have 3.73 gear ratio. Oh BTW, I love the new truck. The interior is better, the ride is better, everything about the truck is better in my opinion. I just hope the 6.7 is going to be as reliable as the 5.9.

My last two trucks where duallys i had a 04 with auto and a 5.9 that the best I could ever see was 15.5 . My O7 6.7 didnt do **** for milage I did see once on a 400 mile run 16 but Normal driving 13. Now with the deletes i am 0ver 17 and very happy. I think the 6.7 with the auto and ex brake is a way better combo . I pull a 40 ft toy hauler In the summer...

your 5.9 has an egr!
My 04 gets 22-24 empty @70 mph and 11-14 pulling various loads.
i'm not saying the 6.7 won't be more reliable, just have to wait & see.

Sounds like once you remove the emissions crap it gets better MPG's than stock. It pays to live outside California, cause I heard of a guy that removed his particulate filter. The CHP pulled him over for speeding and inspected his truck found that it was removed and he recieved a fine for $10K. I do like the new interior, but the body design hasn't grown on me yet. Glad to hear that your MPG's are decent. I would be highly upset, if I bought a new one and it got 13-15 MPG.

All i can say is this. I had a 99 24v and a 2004 24v. i now have a 2007 6.7L auto and am currently on a camping trip pulling a 5ver that weighs in around 11,500. The other two trucks couldn't compare to how well this thing pulls. I'm perfectly happy with mine and have had no issues other than I wish the fuel mileage was better. I'm getting about 10mpg with the big trailer on it. I usually get around 16.5mpg empty.

I thought the internal EGR came out with the 04.5-07 trucks? Am I wrong? Still, the EGR systems on the earlier trucks don't seem to be as comprehensive or restrictive. No regens on earlier trucks, which kills fuel mileage. I mean dang, just look at the 6.7L...looks like a 5.9 covered in alien parasites.

Thats good news that it pulls hard, dont know how many miles you have on it but maybe after a few more the mileage will increase for you. I havent pulled my new toy hauler yet(GVWR 17K), but Im hoping to get 13-14MPG with it. I get 19/21MPG unloaded, so we will see. Have fun camping!

I've only got 18k miles on the truck right now. I used to drive them a lot more but since having a job with a state owned car, my mileage has gone down 80% or more per year. It's a great thing...

I drove a 6.7 and will agree that they have more torque, but when you put 150,000 miles a year on towing, your mpg's are VERY important. If any of my four 5.9's needs injectors, I can replace them myself and be $1,000 cheaper per injector!
Both have pros and cons , but for a few hundred dollars I can buy more h.p. and have the same or more power than a 6.7 without the issues of a 6.7
