If ya wants some bad #'s , a friend of mine just bought 2 brand new super duties, sorry have trouble saying the f word. he traded a 04 2500 cummins in. his mileage was so bad he went to 22.5 wheels, didn.t help. last week i rode with him to christainsburg va, and back we burned $100 worth of fuel to go just under 200 miles, being generous on the calculator he averaged less than 8 mpg, or @ todays price $.50 a mile. he is trying to get his 04 back to drive around and estimate out of. it was getting 20 mpg.
Have to say I drive my new truck less than I drove my old truck but hand calculated It's only 2.8 mpg's different. lots more power and I didn't have to pay for the e-brake. works out fine for me.
Yeah, have ta' agree on the poor fuel mileage BUT all else considered wouldn't want anything else. Friend's F450 SuperDuty won't get over 10 m.p.g. empty or loaded. Plus it's just plain Fugly on the outside. Just put a set of front brakes on @ 125k miles. Didn't really need them right now but they were getting close to needing replaced. 1 set of Bilstein shocks, all the way around - just wanted a little better ride and 1 set of booties @ 78k miles. So if the Dodge wrapper holds up it has been a much better truck than my 04.5 as far as repairs, so far. We'll have to see if the poor mileage will be cancelled out by the money saved with less repairs. Gotta consider everything and look at the big picture for the bottom line comparison.
I have a customer that just shelled out $60,000 for a decked out Ford dually. His mileage is the same as these others stated at 8-10 mpg. When he needs to make the 200 mile roundtrip to me to get supplies he drives his Volvo wagon because he will burn almost a full tank of fuel in the truck coming to see me..
This is the opposite of what physics would tell you to do. That rolling weight in wheels greatly affect mileage - to the negative side.
As with all information, it's only as good as the truthfulness of the person that posted it.
When I had my shop's F450 in for service last month I was shooting the breeze with the service manager, feeling him out about the new 6.4. He said the only real problems he has seen have been overheating issues. Other than that they have been FAR more reliable than the 6.0.
Number one complaint from owners??? Fuel mileage. The service manager said you'd be lucky to average over 10mpg... Ouch!
A buddy of mine bought a new Duramax at the same time I got my truck. He is consistently getting 16-17 with his DPF-equipped truck. Granted he drives like an old lady, but still! Pretty good.
I still think the Cummins is the best option. The e-brake and Cummins power delivery is king!
