Does the heater grid light automatically come on at cooler temps? The engine was off for about 12 hours. It has been coming on for the last two days, but not this AM.
couldnt tell you. it has been down below 48* here at night and i have yet to see mine come on... truthfully im wondering if it is working. I havent had a problem with it starting yet but still...

Mine starts fine at about 10 degrees and 5000' elevation. But much cooler than that it needs the grid. Once at 9 degrees and 6000' my 1st gen had to have it to start.
30 or 40 degrees is no problem but it will come on automatically. I never wait for it though.

I've been wondering about this too. Mine will come on some mornings where it's 65 degrees outside and then won't come on when it's 45 degrees the next morning. Makes me wonder if it's really working right.
It was 31 degrees here this morning and has been in the thirties in the mornings numerous times this month. The grid light comes on then goes out and she starts right up just like the older glow plug system. What i really want to see is when it gets down to -20 or so and see how she handles it.
But so far the answer is yes it works just fine. Not a single problem or hiccup on cold start so far.

Mine came on while up hunting and it was 13 degrees. Started just fine but the first time I saw it. It was news to me because everyones been tellng me that you dont have to wait to start, but thank god Its not my first dance.
Mine has came on almost every morning since the temp in western WA droped to the 40's in AM but it starts fine. We have to wait and see how it does when it gets colder. They say it may be a rough winter this year for a change.

I've gotten in to the habit of waiting through all the beeps, buzzes, and dings before I turn the key, that way it gives me time to notice weather the heater is on or not. I have "jumped the gun" and started it up when it was -5(up in winnipeg last spring) with no ill effects. I believe the grid stays lit as long as you stay below a certain RPm or MPH.
The grid heater light (should) come on when your air intake temp is below 60*. Doesnt matter the temp of the engine or anything else. Mine has came on everytime my air intake temp is below 60*, on my edge chip it tells that temp thats how I know, if its below that or not.
