46RE Issues - need diagnostic help :(

Hi Folks:

My 2003 CTD developed sudden tranny problems (as in, stopped at a gas station with no problems, then drove away 2 minutes later with several issues).

First, I noticed that the tranny no longer shifts into OD. Second, the take-off from stopped in 1st is mushy, like its slipping. Third, the gear indicator square on the dash does not show the "square" around the gear number when the motor is running. The indicator light is there for all gears when the ignition is in the "first" accessory position.

Have tested the transmission range sensor; it did not test out per the factory repair manual so I replaced it - no change or improvement.

The truck has 112K on it - no issues with the tranny up until this incident. If anyone has any ideas or experienced these types of problems I would appreciate some suggestions.

Many thanks,

Andy

First, you might want to post in the "3rd Gen Engine and Drivetrain -> 2003-2007" forum. The guys that visit over there will know more about your 2003.

Second, if your tuck has a 46RE that would explain why it's broke (2003s came with either a 47RE or 48RE).

Finally, I'm no expert but my two cents would be to... (in order):
  • check your trans fluid level (I know it sounds too simple, but truck MUST be level, tranny hot, in neutral with parking brake set or else you'll get a bad reading).
  • adjust cable tension (p. 21-391 of the shop manual).
  • adjust the bands (p.21-374).
  • do a fluid and filter replacement (p.21-383).
  • replace the shift solenoid (p.21-377).
