Probably won't see a noticeable difference going from 265 to 285 if you stick with load range E tires.

I bumped to a 285 on factory rims and thought it looked better. Filled things in nice. I run an 8ply(D) tire. Have hauled up to 30,000lbs and they carried it well. Now I don't do that often but occasionally. Hope this helps.

I went to a bfg all terrain 285/70/17 load range e on my 08 3500. My buddy went with bfg all terrains 315's, 16 inch I think; on his 04 3500, his are load range d. Life comparison's are better for the load range d. My tires are worn to close to replacement after 60,000km. At 40,000 we campared them side by side and the e rated tire was worn x2. I did notice a slight difference in milage for the worst but only a few km per tank (50 or so). I'll probably stay with the bfg all terrain's but I'll definatly go to the d rated next time.
