2009 6.7L Programmers

I'm about to order my new truck a 09 3500 6.7L

I want to know if anybody builds/makes a programer so I can get rid of that darn EGR valve and DPF. I read that the smarty is only good for trucks built prior to March of this year. I can find the DPF delete kits, but the programer might be an issue. I'm not worried about that crappy dodge warranty or that emmission legal stuff. I just want decent fuel mileage.

I'm sure that in time it will be fixed. I'm was thinking about ordering a 5in dpf delete kit. Most of my driving is off road and so it should be no issue Any issues with the truck with a small tune in? Stuff that would void a warranty, like the transmission or injection pump?

I like the SW3 tune so far (60hp). Safe level for stock auto. Towed last week and watching the EGT's cruise to 1400 for the "cleaning" is just rediculous. 20 minutes of that really sucks fuel. MDKRam and myself are planning a beer weekend for some 4" fab work to just do the cat/dpf replacement. Not interested in a 5" kit.

So did the new truck tow as good as the older truck? I took one out for a ride and it felt pretty decent in stock form. That emission stuff, is sure a negative, you have to spend money on a new vehicle so you can save money down the road. I'm thinking of just swapping in a total replacement exhaust system with emulator. I don't know about the egr valve, do you set of codes when you just unplug that valve. The rest of the truck is top notch. My local dealer here sure trying hard to get me into a new ride. Its not to hard right to twist my arm right now as my current daily ride need typical repair stuff. Brakes, tires, new suspension kit and new twins.

The truck towed well. This is my first auto truck in a very long time. Hauled my little 25' TT with little problem, stayed in 6th 98% of the time to maintain 110Kph.. The REGENS SUCK! EBrake is a definite plus as is the gear selection in manual mode.

Again, MDKRam and myself are booking a party for our EPA Hatred bash. A little 4" pipe and some fab work in his home shop for the flanges and we should be set to go. No need to do the whole system. I may spring the $85 for the EGR blocker kit is all.

sweet deal buddy, just keep me posted. I want to block that darn egr, but I'm cheap skate. I just might build my own plates. I order an very late 09 model, so smarty wont work so I'm dreaming of a smokey ride. Imagine me riding a clean diesel. I'm doing the 5in dpf delete and edge right off the dealer foot.

Hey Mike.

Like yourself, I am currently looking at a new truck. In my case, an 09 5500 quad cab 4x4.

I am still not sold on the emissions engine either, but what do you do, I need to replace the 550 ford with something, it is starting to cost me too much downtime. Only problem I foresee, is the lack of dealer support on pretty much any truck up here, and the fact that I travel from nowhere ( home ) to points beyond nowhere ( north ) where there are no roadside assistance services etc. Guess I better carry a spare truck huh?

Seriously enough, a couple guys have come across the counter with some reasonable deals, although they could still do better. Just waiting to see if an offer is accepted or not.

Good luck with your new truck.

Thanks, I imagine you northern boys do have some down sides as for vehicle support. I hope that my tweaking will fix these weaknesses. Dodge just gave me a decent deal on my old 08 1/2ton. After that the deal was done. I'm doing a custom order, I'm hoping on getting more discounts, as its delivered.

The smarty doesn't work at this time on the later 09 CTD trucks. The edge juice with attitude looks promising.

I don't want big power yet out this truck, I just want a decent fuel mileage as 14 to 16 mpg isn't too good (nice truck, just awful fuel mileage). My old truck gets around 18 to 20mpg The 02 is still a great truck, its just a pain for my family to squeeze into the smallish cab. I also want more room to fight with the miss on the family camping trips.

Mike

My 550 ford gets 6.41 mpg US, hand calculated, no matter loaded or "empty" darn near anything would be a big step UP.

I'm not worried about more power either, just reliability.

Its just begging for a nice 12v to put into the 550 ford truck. I would build something, I just don't have time right now. Works been crazy. So much for down time. I want to crank up the fun with my old ride, so the decision is easy from there.

Don't need the blocker plates per ce.. The EGR valve works pretty well to hold it back. I just don't know if the Edge does EGR coverage or just deletes the code. If not, then you would have to unplug the valve and just deal with the code/light.

Be cautioned though, I have been doing some (well alot) of reading and having the Edge or PMT do the ECM code clearing routine continuously may cause problems. You can thank adaptive learning parameters in the ECM for that. Same way the Smarty is not yet compatible, the 09's may be even more sensitive to that routine.

We will have to see the new ride! Just got my canopy put on the 08, true man-van now...

Dog, what do you think about the 3.42 gear ratio vs. the 3.73 ratio? You can get it in the 09 but 08 it was a stick option only.

The auto RE68 has the following gear ratio
3.23 -1st, 1.83-2nd, 1.41-3rd, 1.00-4ft, 0.81-fifth and 0.62 for sixth

The auto RE47 has the following gear ratio
2.45-1st, 1.45-2nd, 1.0-3rd and 0.69 for fourth.

So in theory it should not to bad of gear choice. I ordered the 3.42 which will give me 1750 rpm at 120 kph right now I have 1950 rpm at 120kph. For a mostly hiway driven truck that shouldn't be to bad. It cuts 4k off the maxium trailer weight. I should have thought more about the gear change. I'm towards maximizing fuel mile but probably come back to get me some how.

These days its hard to find a programmer that doesn't leave tracks. Thats why I'm thinking with the edge as it just fools the computer. I'm not gonna crank it up to far so the fuel maps shouldn't show anything odd that would send a warranty red flag. I'm thinking about putting the pyro in the aftermarket exhaust and just adjust the temperature defueling/turbo cool down timer. I just want a rig thats good on fuel. The egr's stuff I haven't figured out yet. The dpf is easy.

Supposably that new xrt tuner is the way to go from what I read on other forums.

I was wanting the 3.73 gears. The 3.42's just seemed pretty steep for towing IMHO. With the 3.73 I was running about 1750 RPM in 6th at 110 kph. Pulled good and wasn't below the torque curve. I am not in the club where lower RPM is better for mileage, rather the opposite. If the BSFC curves were available like they are for the 12V and early 24V you could better plan your towing RPM for best efficiency. My 12V gets better mileage at 2200 Rpm than the new rig at 1750 RPM.
