2007 5.9 shutdown noise

Hello everyone,

I just got a new 2007 Ram 2500 with a 5.9 engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. It seems to make a lot of noise from the transmission when shut down. It sounds a lot better if I keep the clutch in. However, with the clutch out it sounds like something is broken or is breaking in the tranny. The owner's manual says that shutdown rattle is normal with the clutch out, but the noise sounds really bad. I was wondering if this is normal or if I should have it looked at. Does this happen to anyone else?

Thanks,

Chris

Yeah, pretty normal. Happened with my 04.5 all the time. You can do a search on here and read some more info. I think there were a few threads about it.
My old truck would shake all over when turning the switch off....it did help to push the clutch in though.

Yep, my 07 2500 5.9 6 speed is the same way.. I always leave my clutch in when I turn it off and leave the doors shut so I don't have to hear it...

Ok, good. I never owned a diesel vehicle before so I didn't know if this was normal or not. I wanted a diesel Ram when I got my drivers license, but couldn't afford it then. So I got a Hyundai. Well, I just gave that to my friend (with 140k miles on it) and now I have the Ram. I like it a lot, its a great truck.

If you read you owners manual I believe it explains this noise on a manual tranny, There is nothing to worry about Semi truck make the same noise on shut down. Diesel engines have alot of compression and if you undersand what goes on during the shutdown of the engine you'll understand the reason for the noise.
