Yukon Gear: Front Hub conversion ?

Hi,
I have been considering converting my 2004.5 Dodge 2500 front hubs to manual lockouts. My truck only has 60k on it & I am not having any issues.
My reasoning is for mileage & wear & tear on drivetrain.

http://www.yukongear.com/ProductDeta...px?ProdID=9894

I was wondering who has done this conversion in the past & what your opinions where? I will be doing most of the work myself. & yes I have the tools required. Any installation info would be great. I realize there are a few others offering this conversion & I am open to all.

Thanks,
Jeromie

I didn't do the Yukon, but did do the Dynatrac hubs. Saw a solid 1 mpg increase around town driving, but haven't had the chance to measure the mileage on a long highway trip yet. Wish I had done it a lot sooner.

Spyn Tec has one as well.
They all seem to have differ ant good and not as good points but all seem solid.

Chris, How much was the Dynatrac setup? Also, how far do the huds stick out?
Wiskey, Is there somewhere I can read up on these these good & bad points between the different brands?

I've just looked at differ ant install and follow up on the kits.
Basically comes down to, the DT and Yukon are standard designs, using Dana 60 type parts.
Spyn Tec is a different design approach and has more assembly done when it arrives.
I've seen a couple posts about the Yukon needing touch up on the machined surfaces (burrs)
Saw one thread blasting the Dyna...but not sure it was assembled correctly.
Dyna seems to stick out the least.
Can get upgraded Yukon hubs. They all pretty much interchange I believe.
Dynamic uses American made. Yukon is imported parts.
All serviceable bearings.
I believe other was/is tow others, one of which can be pieced together.

Anyways, that's what I've come away with.
They all work well it seems.
Biggest problem always seem to be getting the old stuff off.

There is also some issue with the tone ring sensors being exposed and one of the kits seal them up well....think it was the Yukon.

Well. I bit the bullet & purchased the Yukon Spin Free kit for my Dodge. I got a little over 25% discount off list. So. that will help with the sting. I will be installing everything within the next month or so. I will try to get some pics for everyone. Thx

The problem with making changes for mileage is that it takes so long to repay the investment. As said above, a "solid" 1mpg increase. At that rate it will take nearly 200,000 miles to break even. Unless you pay some one to do the work for you, and then it's considerably longer.

The only wear and tear you save will be on the axles, differential gears, and front drive shaft. Those parts will still wear out (it just takes longer), and can be replaced for less than the cost of installing this kit. So you don't save much money there, either.

If your hubs are already shot, and you need to replace those parts anyway, then this is a good option I suppose. But only if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time.

If you wait too long and lose a bearing on the road you can add the headache and expense of a tow and probable cost of a shop to do repair if you need truck back asap. So you get hit with high dollar repair with inferior stock hubs. I went Dynatrac because I knew my hubs were going bad at 80000 miles. I am at 109k now and I love them. You will notice a lighter tighter front end immediately. Plus the ability to service them easily for very little expense.
I plan on keeping my truck for a long time so it made sense to me. The 100+ lbs of less rotating mass is just icing on the cake.

Ok, Sorry It has taken so long to post my progress & pics. I installed this kit within a 2 weeks of receiving. I did ask for assistance from my rearend builder @ work.
This is the only kit I have had any direct contact with, but from my experience with selling new & used replacement part. I feel it is a very solid & long lasting conversion. Plus, It is all serviceable.

Remove wheel, oem caliper & rotor. We did have to heat the bolts to remove hub.

Looks great.
Did you have to mod any of the parts?
