Your Favorite Synthetic Engine Oil?

Just wondering what you guys favorite synthetic oil is? I'm kinda leaning towards Royal Purple since I can get a 5 gallon pail shipped to my door for a $107 total.

DirtEater, you beat me to it. I am about to replace all the fluids in my truck, engin, tranny, tcase, and diffs and am having a hard time decidin between redline and amsoil. This is perfect, I am sure you cant go wrong with either one but I am interested to see what everyone else thinks.

I'm curious too. Isn't Mobil brand used for Dodge and Jeeps factory non-synthetic oil?

I didn't vote because I run Mobil I in my wife's Durango, Royal Purple in my Acura and Delo 400 in my truck.

I used Mobil1 in my 86 Vette and broke open the engine to replace the timing chain and oil pump (since I had the pan off) at 106,000 miles. I was absolutely amazed at how CLEAN the inside was....no junk at all in the pan or the timing chain cover....the chain had hardly streched, but I replaced it anyway since I had it off. There were no signs of wear (I used plastigauge on a rod bearing)....made me a believer in synthetics.

So, now I use Mobil 1 exclusively in all vehicles....the Cummins gets 5w40 Truck & SUV....

I am certainly not trying to say that the only good oil is Mobil 1, and I am sure they are all great, and some may be better than Mobil 1....just that I am sold on the fact that Mobil 1 does the job and I would not switch to others because I am totally happy with the service I have rec'd....also, Mobil 1 is easy to find and cheaper than many of the others....

RustyJC,

I noticed you are using synthetics in your gas engines & conventional (Delo 400) in your diesel engine. May I ask why you chose to use the conventional oil in the Cummins instead of synthetic? You don't seem to have anything against synthetics since you are using them in your gas engines.

Just wondering what it was that caused you to make that choice.

Thanks, RustyJC.

It's cheaper for a reason. Rotella T synthetic is a Group III base stock (a highly refined dino oil, but still dino oil). Mobil I, Royal Purple, Amsoil and some other synthetics are a Group IV base stock (PAO, or polyalphaolefin). Until Castrol sued and won a case with the FTC a few years ago, Group III oils could not be called synthetics.

Joe,

1. My truck is overfueled, which means that it builds soot in the oil pretty quickly.

2. My truck is used almost exclusively to pull my RV, which means that since taking delivery on 8/15/01, the truck has only been driven 27,800 miles (IIRC). This works out to a little over 6K miles/year. The rest of the time, it sits in the garage except when I pull it out to go to Lowes or Home Depot on the weekend.

3. We live near the Texas Gulf Coast where there is a lot of humidity. Temperature changes can cause condensation on the cooler internal surfaces of the engine - this condensation winds up in the crankcase where it can work with byproducts of combustion to produce weak and strong acids over time.

For the reasons above, I change the oil and filter in the truck every 3K miles (6 months) just to flush out the crud in the crankcase. In this operating environment, Delo 400 does a fine job for me - it's probably the best dino diesel engine oil available.

I am a new member just purchased a mege cab 06 with the cummins and the auto. Can anyone answer as to which Mobil 1 is being referenced for this poll, I know from my past that the 15-50 is not diesel rated. I know that they have a 5-40 truck and suv oil that is rtaed for the diesel service. I have always used the royal purple 15-40 in my older diesel.
