won't move under own power, intermittentely

Hey all,

I have been doing some heavy hauling this week pulling a trailer 30 miles in 100+ heat up some fairly steep freeway hills and about 5 miles of twisting, hilly country roads. I made 5 round trips in the course of 2 days.

Engine and tranny temps both normal for a hot day even as I pulled past my buddy climbing the big hill on the freeway (Ford driver)

After all said and done and I'm approaching home (2 miles out) the CEL illuminates, truck running and driving fine... I park it and make note to pull the codes. The next morning I fire it up to head out to a quick job. The CEL came back on, I put the truck in D and pulled to the other side of my property to load up some tools. I left the truck running for the 5-10 min load up. When I went to leave I placed the truck in D and she didn't go anywhere, just like I was in neutral. Ran through all the gears and no go, shut 'er off and used another vehicle. I came back a few hours later, started her up, placed in R and backed it up a few feet, placed in D pulled forward a bit then backed it up the road to the other side of property, all like normal. Then put in P waited a few seconds and went to D - Nothing... while in D i hit the "tow haul" and I could feel it go into gear. Placed back in P then D and again nothing. I shut it off and a few hours later jumped back in, started and pulled down to my shop as normal. Placed in N then in D, nothing..

So, at first start up it engages gears like normal, warms just a bit and the absolutely nothing, like its in neutral. There is no slipping, it's either in gear or not.

Code is P1740 which relates to Torque Converter clutch and overdrive clutch

I'm thinking it may be the governor solenoid.... any ideas?

I pulled the pan and fluid looked like it normally does at changes with same amount of debris in the pan and magnet. That made me feel better! Replaced the governor solenoid and governor sensor and all is well! Dodged a bullet on that one...

I usually run Smarty on higher levels and I do have to say I have been battling shift flair since the tnt program. I'm thinking of installing the BD pressure switch to help and prolong the life of this tranny. Will post follow up...

110k miles on truck, thought it was a gonner

Thought all was well....

Pulled 5ver 70 miles or so on Thursday and everything seamed fine. put a few miles on truck without trailer and then hooked up to pull 5ver home. A short jaunt to the freeway didn't reveal any issues but once I was on freeway I quickly noticed the torque converter would not lock up. Tried switching gears, tow haul mode and even pulled over and restarted truck and the rat bastard would not lock. I drove home slowly watching the temps which stayed at 195-205.
Once home and with the trailer in the driveway I took a drive around the block and it drove fine but the dang converter wouldn't lock. So, then I hooked the trailer up to put in storage and the truck made it 100 yards and the tranny quit, no slipping, just quit. Now all the symptoms from the first post are back. Let it cool, start and drive..... put in different gear and nothing. arrg....

Oh, the MIL light is not coming back on....

Pulled the trans out and sent it to a local shop here in Sacramento called ATO. I had been speaking to Jim and he made me feel very comfortable with his process and knowledge. I was taken on a tour of the shop and met the crew, very nice individuals and VERY clean. I decided to have Jim rebuild my transmission with his Super Heavy Duty package. Once my transmission was torn down Scott, the tech who worked on mine, told me that the pressure valve was sticking and my problems had nothing to do with the governor solenoid or transducer. It was simply coincidence the tranny worked pulling the 5ver after changing those parts. Possibly I just knocked the valve body around enough to keep it from totally sticking.
Anyways, I have the tranny back and have only a few hundred miles. I am very pleased with his work!
