Actually, specifically a 04.5?
Cheap code reader at Amazon
I have three codes (P0191, P0514 and P1740) that I would like to clear. Of those, the only one I am concerned with watching is the P1740. The CEL went off on its own after a couple of days. I have no symptoms of trans malfunctions. So, I just want to clear the codes and see if I get them again. I don't have a smarty or other code reader to reset the codes and I came across this one on Amazon. At $20, it seems like no-brainer if it works.

"2002 and newer vehicles that support Mode 9" it should work with your truck because its newer than 2002, but im not sure what the Mode 9 means.
my guess... Fairly new truck, fairly new device, and both use OBD2....it should work.
good luck

Why not just take it to the local parts store and have them cleared for free? I'm assuming you want peace of mind if the codes pop up again and you need to clear them out or just see what they mean huh?
Yes, mainly I just want to clear the codes so I know when/if they come back. I can read the codes using the key trick and get plenty of feedback for what they mean from this forum.
Younan, I think you posted the above in the wrong thread.
I ordered this code reader and will report my results. I would think a $20 tool to clear these codes would be something of interest to the members here.

i had 1 code already from the injector issues that have been fixed, today i changed the oil and had the air intake off from the air cleaner to the turbo, OOPS i started it and the check engine came on because the cold air sensor was unplugged. now i have 3 codes, 1 from the injector issues, 2 from the sensor unplugged.
i was at Sears today and bought this for $49
it works, cleared the codes.
it came with a book for codes and this CD
kinda looks like the one above for $17.49
around here the stores will check your codes but will not clear them.

Well, I got the Autel MaxiScan MS300 and it did read the P1740 code. But, it didn't clear it. The other two codes I had previously (P0191 and P0514) had apparently cleared on their own. The P1740 is still there with a P after it on the scanner which makes me wonder if this is a "pending" code. According the manual, a pending code has PD on the display. Mine shows only a P. The manual isn't the greatest and I'm assuming the scanner has evolved since the printing of the manual.
I told the scanner to erase the codes and it did so with the expected "Erase Done" confirmation. But, a rescan shows the "P1740 P" is still there. Since I didn't drive or even start the truck between scans, I can only conclude that the erase just simply didn't erase this code (as opposed to it receiving the fault again).
So, I am concluding that either:
1) This scanner doesn't erase the mfr specific codes (which I'm assuming p1740 is an example of) as it is advertised to do
or
2) It doesn't erase "pending" codes (if the P on my display actually means that this is a pending code)
Has anyone else had trouble erasing the P1740?
Note that the CEL has been off for over 2 months since I noticed this code. I am assuming if the P1740 fault persists, the CEL would come on again? Is this assumption correct?
Again, shifting, lockup, etc. all appear to be working perfectly.

I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right. And, it says "Erase Done!" or whatever the affirmative message is ...
So, either the erase is not working or the code is tripping again right away. I don't think this is likely because I rescan before even disconnecting the scanner and the code is still there. It just seems to be skipping the P1740 entirely during the erase.
