I used about 6 feet of 3/4 inch heater hose and 2 90 degree elbows. I put about 3 inches of the hose on the end of the crankcase breather pipe (located behind the fuel filter) to put the elbow on. I cut about 3/4 of an inch off the end of one of the 90 degree elbows and put it into the hose I put on the breather. I cut the elbow after some trial and error and found that I needed it shorter to clear the drive shaft to the front axle. Then I ran about 5'6" of the hose down the frame rail towards the rear of the truck. I ran the hose through a space on the crossmember near the rear of the transmission and then put the other 90 degree elbow on the end. I took another 3 inch piece and cut it so that it was angled on the end and put it so the angle was open and facing rearward. I used several wire zip strips to hold the hose to the frame rail.

Hey BPD239,
I've thought about doing the same thing to my breather tube, in Georgia I don't have to worry much about snow but I was thinking about using a tee on the end with a couple inches of hose going different directions. I burned up my tranny in my Chevy 3500 coming home from a deer hunting trip to Ill. because the vent tube was caked with mud and tranny couldn't breath.

I'm not a chemist but we could use one on this smelly oil subject. I never had an odor until I got some synthetic oil mixed in with the Rotella. Fortunately, this was in my oil drain pan which I keep under my deck at home. As long as the drain pan was closed tight, there was no odor. Open a vent or the drain plug and a stinking gas comes out that will take your breath away. My wife insisted that we had a leak in our propane tank until I showed her otherwise.

Chitwood,
On my 2002 when I took the breather bottle off, I did use a "t" and had good luck with it, but I only ran it down to the front axle. I figured that running the hose along the frame rail to the center of the truck would work without a "t". I don't do mud anymore, paid too much for the truck to do that to it! The way I ended the hose the crossmember provides some protection also. I guess I could also drill a small hole in the back of the "t" at the crossmember for extra protection and it wouldn't hurt anything.

I don't mind the smell of diesel, but the smell that comes through the heater is nasty. I don't think it is a diesel smell it is more like burnt oil smell. There have been a lot of threads on the subject and I wanted to wait till I changed the oil to see if running the vent out would help and it did. There are other threads on this, where extending the breather didn't help, but it has for me so far.

My truck just hit 21,567 miles and I decided to try some 5W40 Rotella Synthetic. After idling the truck and verifying no leaks at the drain plug, oil filter & fuel filter, I never noticed the usual smell I get with the 15W40 Rotella. I should know more tomorrow after a short trip.
