Wierd ticking noises emitting from the HO CTD

I get some weird ticking noises from my HO CTD when the engine is below 190 degrees and the oil pressure is still on the high end of the scale (cold oil).

It seems to go away after some time running the engine (IE: on the interstate at 65+mph or driving around in 5th at 50-55mph).

I also seem to feel the thump of the ticking noise when my foot is on the accelerator, and it later goes away when the engine gets warm.

I am talking about 10 miles worth of driving to get it to go away.

Just wondering if this ticking noise is typical and why?
(mechanical/solid lifters or large valve lash when cold = what is up?)

???

I believe the ticking sound is the injection pump. They are known to make this sound. I think being cold only makes it worse because the fuel and moveable parts have to work harder to move.
DM01

Mine has the same clicking/clacking as the "old" ones (at a much lower decibel level) but it all goes away as it warms up.

Best to y'all
Bill

Mine has more of a typical diesel sound when starting on a cold morning - - - I know, quit throwing snow *****. Cold here is like 35 - 40 degrees. It usually quits within a few blocks, but it is not that cold to begin with. I think the quiet engine makes all of us quite aware of noises we would never hear in an older CTD.

I do have a rattle of something loose somewhere at low RPMS. I have looked everywhere and can't find it. Happens like when I drop down to third to come around a corner - - say 900 to 1300 rpms. Then, it goes away above that. Happens in all gears (except 1).

Bob

Here we go....

I have been unable to susbstantiate whether or not the transmission has an internal pump...however I did come up with this handy "red is bad, yellow is only OK under light loads and keep it in the Green to Lilac range for normal operations" transmission operation guide.

Hope it helps...

Clicky on the Linky

Re:Wierd ticking noises emitting from the HO CTD

Hummin'Man,

I am struggling a little with the thought of having to keep rpms above 1500 when I am running solo and not hurrying. When I come around a slower corner, I typically drop into third. I do not run steady below 14 - 1500, only under non- aggresive accelleration such as a corner and in the lower gears. If I had to keep rpms above 1500, that would mean going to about 2100 in second gear before grabbing third in a normal easy takeoff. It would also mean dropping clear back to second going around a corner.

I would love to have someone with the new 48RE post their rpm shift points during a normal easy take off from a stop. At what point does the tranny shift and what does it drop to when it shifts. I would think that would be a good starting guide for us stickers since DC designed the shift points. My old V10 is not a good guide for my brain as it was an auto. I know not to lug the engine, but I am now wondering really where "lug" is. A lot depends on load and what gear you are in. Hopefully some nice lucky new 48RE owners would help this topic with some figures. How about it KenR?

I would say the 48 auto is a little different. It has the viscous torque converter that limits load on the engine.

I typically downshift when I hit 1300-1500 rpms slowing down. Downshift at 1500-1600 when on the throttle.
Re:Wierd ticking noises emitting from the HO CTD

FiverBob, just got on so will answer your request on the next drive.

Meanwhile, my 48RE on normal took offs shifts at 12mph, 22mph, 38mph and into overdrive at 45mph. Will provide RPMs later.

The shifts are very quick so I doubt much loss of RPMs occur.

The more I drive it the better I like it. Waiting for a hitch and then the towing test drive.

I feel lucky

Cheers

If you have the transfer case lever, reach down and push it lightly forward when the clicking noise is present. Not enough to shift, just enough to put some pressure on the linkage. I will bet the noise goes away.

Guess I am a little confused about the "lugging" thing. Unless I remember wrong the HO maxes torque at 1400 rpm. Seems like it would be quite a bit below that to actually lug the engine.

just curious, mark
