Re:Wierd ticking noises emitting from the HO CTD

Thanks Ken, just what I wanted. The auto is shifting at just about the same points I do if I am not hurrying and not towing. We drop about 5 - 600 (approx) at each shift, so if I shift out of 2nd at 16 or 1700, I drop to about 10 - 1100. As stated by Mark, the torque is coming on at 1400. I do not feel any lugging at 1000 or 1100 (that is running solo). I obviously run them up much higher when pulling the fiver. I find I am shifting at about 2100 in the lower gears when towing. I run up higher in the higher gears before shifting.

Interesting observations. Thanks. Still wish I knew what Cummins calls lugging. Lugging can change with gear and load.

Bob

5rBob...did you read the quote by KenR.

The engine is never dropping below 1400rpm when it shifts...actually shifts slightly in favor of 1500 as the low rpm after an upshift.

Just trying to help out.

With my 6-shooter I am upshifting at 22-2300rpm dropping to 16-1700rpm (I am told by others on the forum this is just short of the horsepower power band). I similarly downshift around 1500rpm bringing the rpms back up to 2000rpm. Effectivbely always operating the engine while peak torque is available if I mash it.
FiverBob Said:
would love to have someone with the new 48RE post their rpm shift points during a normal easy take off from a stop. At what point does the tranny shift and what does it drop to when it shifts. I would think that would be a good starting guide for us stickers since DC designed the shift points. My old V10 is not a good guide for my brain as it was an auto. I know not to lug the engine, but I am now wondering really where "lug" is. A lot depends on load and what gear you are in. Hopefully some nice lucky new 48RE owners would help this topic with some figures. How about it KenR?

On a normal easy take off here are the results:

Gear Shift Speed RPM RPM Drop
1 to 2 12 1500 Less than 100

2 to 3 22 1650 Less than 200

3 to 4 38 1800 Less than 200

to overdrive 45 2000 500 (quickly)

I hope I have this correct. It is hard to watch the Speed, RPMs and road at the same time.

Maybe someone else will confirm this but this is what I remember seeing.
I also shift around 1700 to 1800. Don't need a clutch then ;D
It is not lugging I don't think. Empty of course. I'll rev her up when she is loaded...

Paul
'03 HO/6spd quad sb

Found this in the TDR web site:
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...threadid=81370

my '03 H.O. had the tick at idle since new. it sounded fine at higher rpm's but always came back at idle. I found a cure and it's not pretty. Turns out that the H.O. has a notch in the bottom of the piston on one side to allow clearance for the oil cooling nozzle jet. if a piston is installed with the notch on the wrong side, the piston will lightly tap the oil nozzle on the down stroke and make the tapping noise. This was the case with mine on #5 cylinder. chryslers fix was to replace the short block @ 10,000 mi.. there was no damage to the original block that I could see. after 18 days in the shop the truck is back together and I have put 1,100 miles on the new engine and it runs the way it was designed to.

My 04 has the same tick after starting but seems to go away after warming up. It has been to cold for me to really check tho.
