why do some people think the CP3 can be timed?

if you read the theory behind it you will know timing cp3 wont do anyting. its just a supply pump for the HPCR system. that would be like saying you have to time your water pump or your electric lift pump....doesnt make sense.

yet when i search forums countless people are stating they get quieter engines, more power and fuel economy by turning the gear where it meshes with the timing chain.

am i on glue or are other people on crack?

Old habits are difficult to break for the relativelly less understanding of the theory group. I believe a new name was recentlly posted. It is the new "internet experts". JMHO of course.

There is some truth to rotating the cp-3 shaft 30* to eliminate some pressure rattle than can occur.Has to do with the fuel compression being in sink with an injector firing. When I went to a stage 2 pump I had what sounded like elevated pressure rattle even though the pressure was at stock levels.John recommended rotating the shaft to help eliminate it.I never did and eventually went to a stage 3 and the rattle is gone, probably due to the fact the new pump was not aligned the same as the other. If I recall correctly this procedure is also listed in the factory service manuals for cp-3 removal and replacement on the 6.7's.

While timing is not the best description its suited for what needs to be done.

Phasing the CP3 to the engine is more along the lines of what is being done, however, that takes a bit more to explain and understand.

When ever you have to high compressions mechanical items connected by gears you have to phase them to hit compression at approximately the same time or you will have gear noise. Its unavoidable due to the gear lash where chains stretch a bit to minimize it. The CP3 has 3 cylinders and is driven at 1/2 speed of the crank so phasing it to hit the top of the compression stroke at roughly the same time as the engine just minimizes the amount of kick in the gear lash.

This is not a new thing, its been a normal engineering design item for years.

Now were are the Internet experts that say this is just the Internet talking? Funny how logic silences the naysayers.

Sure wish there were pics of this procedure - I'd be willing to try it.

I'd try it. I've only got 600 miles left on my warranty though, so if someone could post pics that'd be great.
