Who makes the 48RE?
Who makes the 48RE?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've ready hundreds of posts and haven't seen an answer yet.
All the chevy guys rave about their "allison" tranny and how good it is. Who makes the 48RE? Is it just a Dodge OEM transmission or is it from another company like the allison? How does it stack up to the allison?
Thx in advance...

You say (All the chevy guys rave about their "Allison" tranny's). Ask a big rig driver OK well thy the mack Daddy of Tran's well stock ones that is. You can build Any trans but the Alison is 1 bad tranny from the start.
I wish D/C had um in trucks.

The bad rap about the DC trans was started by websites such as this one (not saying this website) and it came from aftermarket vendors trying to make a few bucks off unsuspecting people. Now don't anyone get me wrong about aftermarket vendors. They definetly have a good purpose, it's just sometimes a few get a little over zellus trying to sell the product and make a bad rep for the others.
There have been magazine articles which did polls and studies on which automatic transmission of the diesel pickup truck industry out of the big 3 in america. I do not remember the exact failure rates but they were something like:
Dodge---3.2% failure rate
Ford----3.6% failure rate
Chevy--4.2% failure rate

On a side note, wouldn't mind hearing peoples opinions on how the 48RE stacks up against the competition.

The 1000 series allison isnt as strong as everyone seems to think it is. It takes less work to make them a strong tranny, but they can really only hold about 400hp to the ground in the stock format.
The 48RE is actually a pretty good transmission. It is made in house by Chrysler. If you look at them they have done most of the upgrades that we do to the 47re to make them stronger. They have the 6pin planetary gears, extra clutches. For moderate power increases a torque converter and valvebody upgrade are usually enough to handle it.

And yes, the 48re is a decendant of Chrysler's very first fully automatic transmission from the 1950's.
