white smoke, injector?

hey, were guys saying that white smoke on a cold start is a sign of injector failure? still trying to locate the cold start issue and today I am seeing white smoke on start up, and it goes away after a few minutes of idling.

ian515,

The only time I can get my engine to smoke at all on start up is if I don't let the grid heater run it's heat cycle. Does it only smoke from an overnight cold start up or will it smoke after its been shut off for 3 hours? I'm starting to wonder if your grid heater is working properly or has that already been checked out? Being everyone has said how well a CTD starts in cold temps I'm going to find out first hand here shortly how well my truck will start after setting for 2 weeks at the Des Moines airport.

White smoke on startup some times comes from a bad injector that has leak down overnight. To check it you could unbolt the exhaust manifold and pull it away from the head and have someone start the vehicle to see which exhaust port the smoke comes from. The white smoke will come from the bad injector. Make sure you protect your ears on start up, as it will be loud.

I actually just read about the exhaust manifold trick, I might try that next. good luck at the airport. if you have any issues and get stranded (and can PM me) let me know, I am 10 minutes away. I got stranded there after a 4 day trip to FL. so in the morning I was enjoying 80 degrees on the beach, and then at midnight I was freezing and getting into an epic battle with my truck because it wouldnt start. ended up having to come back the next day for it.

I think I should just take it back to the dealer, since obviously they havent fixed it. of course they really like that aftermarket parts excuse.

I had forgot about the exhaust trick until I got and email from a friend who has a head problem with the engine in his semi. Yes they alway try to blame every thing on after market parts as that is how they were been trained by Dodge. I think boys at Dodge are more parts changers then diesel mechanics.
