Redline has a distributor locator. Even though I live in Canada, there is a dealer in Detroit, less than 30 minutes from my house. I am going with the 75W140NS in the rear axle because of my towing weight. I don't want the limited slip additives so I am going with the NS version. I haven't made up my mind about the transmission yet. Will probably stay with the Pennzoil Synchromesh until guys using the Redline MTL have more miles and experience with it. I really find it interesting that NV would specify a non-synthetic in their 5600 but specify a synthetic in their 4500 transmission. But since there must be a reason.

I have never been a fan of Pennzoil but a lot of guys are running it. I am interested in the redline or the amsoil maybe some one should run a poll to see what is being used most.

Unfortunately, the Pennzoil product is the only one out there that specifically says on the container that it meets the DC specs for lube for the NV5600. I am no fan of Pennzoil either but at least if something goes wrong they can't blame me for using the wrong oil. Other manufactures will tell you they recommend a lube for the 5600 but not one I have contacted will put in writing that it specifically meets that DC spec. Only that DC has to prove that their product caused the failure. That is all well and good but while you are in a protracted argument with DC your truck is off the road. Still, with what it known about synthetics today, it is strange they are not specifying it.

I justed e-mailed New venture to ask them what synthetic oils are approved for use in the NV5600. Maybe they can shed some light on the subject.

6 spd Transmission - REDLINE MTL ( cause it's specifically made for transmissions) Cheapest I found $7.00 a quart at
http://www.myoilshop.com/AutoPrds.html

REDLINE QUOTE " In your NV5600 I would recommend the Red Line MTL, it satisfies the viscsoity and gear lube type called for in the Mopar spec, would replace the part#04874464."

Have a nice day!

Thanks for the link. Couple questions:

Is it difficult to change this oil in the 6spd?

How do you do it?

How much oil does it take?

PADZZ,

Transfer case takes up to 3 qts, depending on which one you have.
NV5600 6spd takes 9.5 pts or 5 qts
Frt and Rear Axle (3.73 rear) takes 5 pts forward and 8 pts rear (8 qts total)

Oh yeah...look at this site http://www.amsoil.com/products.htm

Go under the Product Innformation Site and type in your rig and youll see all the info you'll need.

I just got my Amsoil shipment last night for engine and frt & rear end and transfer case, and am waiting for the REDLINE MT1 to come for my transmssion.... which you can get (cheapest I found)
http://www.myoilshop.com/AutoPrds.html so I can do it all this weekend or maybe next week.

Oh, just crawl underneath your rig and remove drain(s) plugs, except for frt&rear, which you remove the covers...Then you have to use a Siphon Pump (plunger-puller gadget -some use turkey basters) to pull the oil out of the bottles and push into the transmission...

good luck

Its easy. You do need a 17mm hex wrench to remove the fill plug on the side of the tranny. To drain the tranny you have to remove a bottom bolt holding on a PTO cover.

Its a good idea to loosen the fill plug before you drain it dry. If you drain it first, then find out for some reason you can't remove the fill plug, you're sitting on a $40k anchor.

For filling I use a little thumb operated hand pump that Boat Stores sell to fill up outdrives. This pump can be screwed onto many oil containers to make it easy. If you use one of these you only have to cut off the screw fitting on the hose that mates to the outdrive - then stick the hose into the hole.

Thanks from the 2 USN retirees! USN myself....but only for 3 1/2 yrs.
When would be a good time to switch? I've got a whopping 750 miles on mine now, and 3rd is and has been a little tough to get in gear. I'm trying to use all gears (except 1st-too low). I love it!

Padzz, I changed my fluids around 18k. My tranny was getting more sticky going into 3rd gear, but it wasn't too bad early on. I'm sure the cold weather is also contributing to the stickiness - at least for the first drive of the day. Mine was like that too.

I'm running MTL in my Mustang's 5 speed, and in this COLD weather, its significantly stiffer than it was when I was running ATF in it. But after a couple of miles, its slicker than a hot knife in butter!

I'm thinking that you might want to drive it a few thousand miles and let the tranny polish itself up some more before changing fluid. If the shifting is indeed excessively sticky, you might want to document it at the dealer first - "just in case".

And Gary, be careful, I think you'll find the DC dealers in the 21st century may have a slightly different attitude on popping for new trannys than a BMW dealer of the mid 80's.

BTW, have you guys verified that you've got a full fill in the tranny? Stranger things have happened.

One other tidbit, using the same thought as doing the first engine oil change early, you may want to consider changing the fluids in the diffs sooner than the 15k sked the first time. I'm not having any problems with mine, but I did have LOTS of sparkly's in the pan after dumping the front diff. YMMV.

It 9:15am Texas time, shift colors, diving underneath to change oils

Transxle - AMSOIL ATF - Took between 5-6 pints - DC FILL FROM FACTORY WAS 1/4 to 1/2 pint low!
6 SPD NV 5600 Transmission - REDLINE MTL going in as I type this. Bullabula is right about the 17mm hex head wrench, the fill plug is a pain...I used a 3/4 inch long bolt with a 17mm head and put the head into the plug and then put a vice grip on the bolt threads and turned. Found out that MAC & Snap-on tools make a special tool that costs almost $50, just to check the oil. Removed lower bolt on PTO (14mm head) and it's draining right now...

Within next hour front and read axles (3.73) getting AMSOIL Series 2000 75-90w gear oil

AMSOIL TS 189 Foam air filter installed two nights ago...quicker throttle response..little more noticeable turbo whine...

I too used a bolt with a 17mm head and two nuts tightened on each other to remove the fill plug, cost just over a $1, instead of hunting everywhere for a 17mm hex. my tranny took just over 4 quarts before it started running out.
I didn't change axles, tranny or t-case until 49k. and honestly all the oil looked good. very little glitter.
