On my 04 cummins I am getting a code p0514, battery temp sensor. I want to inspect it for moisture or a loose conection but I dont know where its at. Can someone tell me where to find it. Thanks.

 

I think I have read it's under the Drivers Battery...

 

 

BATTERY TEMPERATURE
SENSOR
DESCRIPTION
The Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) is attached
to the battery tray located under the battery.
OPERATION
The BTS is used to determine the battery temperature
and control battery charging rate. This temperature
data, along with data from monitored line
voltage, is used by the PCM (ECM Diesel) to vary the
battery charging rate. System voltage will be higher
at colder temperatures and is gradually reduced at
warmer temperatures.
The PCM sends 5 volts to the sensor and is
grounded through the sensor return line. As temperature
increases, resistance in the sensor decreases
and the detection voltage at the PCM increases.
The BTS is also used for OBD II diagnostics. Certain
faults and OBD II monitors are either enabled
or disabled, depending upon BTS input (for example,
disable purge and enable Leak Detection Pump
(LDP) and O2 sensor heater tests). Most OBD II
monitors are disabled below 20°F.
REMOVAL
The battery temperature sensor is located under
the vehicle battery and is attached (snapped into) a
mounting hole on battery tray (Fig. 1).
(1) Remove battery. Refer to 8, Battery for procedures.
(2) Pry sensor straight up from battery tray
mounting hole to gain access to electrical connector
(Fig. 1).
(3) Disconnect sensor from engine wire harness
electrical connector.
INSTALLATION
The battery temperature sensor is located under
the vehicle battery and is attached (snapped into) a
mounting hole on battery tray.
(1) Pull electrical connector up through mounting
hole in top of battery tray.
(2) Connect sensor.
(3) Snap sensor into battery tray.
(4) Install battery. Refer to 8, Battery for procedures.

 

Thanks for the replys, I took the battery out and found the sensor. I took it off and inspected it, I also put some dielectric grease on the conection. It still shows the same code, p0514. I would clear the code but I dont have a scanning tool to do it. I mite have to buy a new sensor.

 

You can call around to your local autoparts stores, (autozone, ORilies, Advanced) and they may have a code reader to clear them for free.

 

Post up your location. Some one may be close by with a Smarty or Bullydog that can also clear it for you.

 

If u live where it is cold this time of year it is probably normal. My truck does this many times throughout the winter. The sensors measure to much difference between them and kick the code. Dodge came out with a fix but you will get the reverse horn honk so I didnt get it the code goes away after a few days.

 

I have a friend that has a smarty that can clear it for me, I just have to drive over to the next town to have it done. Im still dealing with the p0251 code now, I think I have to get a new fca. Thanks

 

Had the ECM(U) updated at the dealer to cure the Bat temp sensor problem. No honk, honk. Asked the tech to make sure he disabled that function. It certainly edit off the neighbors when you add honking to the the diesel at 0600 on Sat/Sun. Now, if Dodge would just redesign the key software so it doesn't go into lock or panic mode when you try to start the truck!

 

Winter plays screwy with the batt temp sensor. P0514 is a soft code and will go away on its own. I've had the same code and also get the Fan Control Circuit P0480 during the winter. The codes come and go when ever they feel like it. My truck has been doing this for the 5 1/2 years I have owned it. I just ignore them. One week, one of the codes or both will show up and the next week they will be gone. It's not even worth my time to reach under the back seat and pull the Smarty out to clear them.

 

Thanks for all the help guys, maybe in the winter a person should install one of those handle bar heaters that are on snowmobles and put it on top of the sensor so it shows that its warmer than it is, haha.

 

I had mine in for that, too. There is a TSB for a reflash to change the rationality difference between the various temp sensors that will trip that trouble code.

 

How much does the reflash cost.

 

Depends if the truck is still under warranty or not.

If not, call around to a couple of different dealers. Some dealers are cool and will only charge you like a 1/4 hour, some will charge you more.
