What's your guess?

176000 miles, no codes, fuel rail retourqed, this truck is surging, more like your hitting a gust of wind, sometimes it cuts out and picks back up. The tac doesn't move most of the time, when it does only drops a couple hundred rpms. this happens between 1500-2000 rpms, more so on a flat road where your not really pulling a load. If I put it in tow/haul and let it run at 1800 or so constant rpm's it will do it all the time. Starts fine, idles fine, accelerates a little sluggish, unless you really put your foot in it, then it goes good. not smoking bad since fuel rail retorque. The only guy at my dealer that's worth a crud on these trucks is out sick, so I'm trying to self diagnose this. I replaced fuel filter, run different fuel, put seafoam in the filter canister and ran that through, didn't even smoke. may run slightly better, I think my next move will be FCA, because this is more severe than 1 injector could cause, beside it's not knocking. any other ideas, thanks guys

X2 on the pump. Have you had the in tank done, or is that the original canister mounted FP?

I have a FCA that I would not mind letting you borrow to TS it if you like. Just gotta send it back to me.

Had the intank done at 140000 miles, but my dealer could have messed it up.

not an expert here, but they removed the fuel lines and retorqued all the high pressure connections, and replaced the air intake gasket.

still searching and still surging

ok, now it's 12-19, truck has been at dealer since monday, spent more than 30 hours on it, still no better. Replaced fca, ran for 75 miles and started surging again, they have replaced injectors 2 at a time, no change, cp3 pump tested 3 times, passed every time, lift pump in tank changed, all wiring from tank to engine inspected, still no codes. Now they want me to spend 2300.00 to replace the cp3, even though it's passed flow test 3 times. has anybody experienced surging that starts after 50,60,or 70 miles of driving? if you have , let me know because I can't take a gamble and buy a cp3 online, and that not be the problem and i don't really want to pay them 2300 for theirs. on the bright side they asked me what kind of oil I use(valvoline premium blue), 3 of the techs said they have never seen one with 177,000 on it that looked brand new like mine.

Fuel filter? or a rag left in the tank?

I know it sounds stupid, being that the dealers techs know what they are doing.

5v referance wire that goes to the A/c pump rubbing?

Don't throw your money and part at the problem just yet.

Is it a hard surge or a slow fluid type surge?

The fuel filter was the first thing I replaced, and they replaced in tank pump on weds. I've read about this wire rubbing against the ac compressor, think I'll go to the dealers lot and look for that myself. The surge, most of the time, is like the cruise control cutting out, then it picks right back up. it may do this for a few miles then stop for a couple of miles. It seems(i KNOW this sounds stupid)like it does alot more around tractor trailers on the interstate, at least it seems more severe around them, after I get away from the turbulence it's not as bad. Dealer claims the truck is losing fuel pressure, but they don't know how or why.

What year did the CTD go to the cable-less throttle? If you have the electronic throttle control , could be a sensor or loose connection, maybe?

I have the same exact problem!! No codes! I have replaced PCM, FCA, Air Temp. Press. sensor, Lift pump (in-tank) and had it reflashed with no fix. I am ready to pull my hair out. I have a APP sensor coming in tom. so i will try it and let you know. If you find anything please let me know ASAP.

Thanks

Black22, yesterday they played around with wiring harnesses, and told me to take it and drive it, drove it 10 miles, no problem, today drove it 3 miles, started surging again. If I had hair I'd be pulling it out too. I had app sensor go out about 20,000 miles ago, didn't throw a code at first, but it freaked out and quit running and threw one. Let me know how yours goes, that app is an expensive one.

Surging Motor

JUST a suggestion... I know you took it to the dealer but.... was it a cummins establishment or dodge dealership?
There is a difference. If the truck is warrented and the dodge dealer can't fix it, there just going to send it to the guys who made the motor. Search on the net for a Cummins place by you and i will bet they will know within minutes. I know they helped me here in the Detroit area. Loss of power could be a number of things. Did you lash the valves yet? If they are loose you could have loss of power. Stay positive and you will get!

Here's a maybe. My 04 surges with the cruse on especially downhill, until I installed a Quad Max Mileage Module. Now it's smooth as silk. The module only connects to the rail pressure sensor and the MAP sensor. Perhaps one of those two sensors are sending out a screwy signal.
If I take the MMM off truck surges again.
