Whats up with my 06?

Love my 06 but I think there is a problem. Fuel mileage is significantly worse than my 05 was getting. My 06 is only getting about 12 to 14 miles per gallon with 50/50 highway/city driving. The 05 I had was getting around 18 mpg. Also, the engine light came on for about a half hour while I was on a trip to Florida. It finally went off and never came on again. In addition, I get a lot of white smoke at start up when the engine is cold. The 05 had some white smoke at start up but not nearly as much as the 06. I have an appointment with the dealer on Wednesday and was hoping you folks could give me some suggestions to help steer them in the right direction. The 06 has about 4,500 miles on it. Your comments and suggestions would be most appreciated.
Bob

You guys know how to make a fella feel bad. I sure hope the fuel mileage I am getting is not typical for 06's and I sure hope I am not being punished by God! Seriously, does this sound like an injector problem or what?

right now im showing 12.7 on the overhead in my 06 for strictly city driving. I am very easy too...normally let the truck shift at 1700-1800 and i am very easy on the pedal. I am hoping that it will get better in the near future...it does only have 550 on the clock...Jason

I don't have an 06.....but my guess is that you just haven't broken it in yet. Probably needs some good hard pulling miles on it....and maybe at around 15,000 or so.....will run better, be loosened up some, and get better mileage.

Don't pamper it....stick your foot through the firewall every once in a while.

My truck avgs about 13-14.6 in city/road mixed driving....45 minutes in traffic one way each morning to work...then highway or country roads on weekends with little traffic.
On pure highway driving keeping rpm's under 2000 rpms (1850 is best so far) I am around 19.6 if flat and no wind...18.9 overall though.

I live in south carolina so I do not think we get the winter blend fuels down here and my tires are the OEM tires which are at 50 and 60 psi.

I don't get white smoke at startup but we have only had half a dozen mornings below freezing this year total... 68 for hight today!

I just think it is a mixture of items...as my first week with my truck the mileage was terrible but I found myself accelerating to higher rpms from lights and stops....when I began to ease on the power rather than jump on it like I do on my motorcycle...mileage got better.

That's about what I see too. From what I've been reading there may be very inconsistant timing from truck to truck. See posts about crankshft sensor and tone ring mods. From what I understand you can actually just loosen the 4 bolts holding the tone ring and turn it to the right (facing the engine) and retighten. Even if that is not enough the tone ring mod is very simple just don't over do it. Read all the posts and there are about 20 pages to determine for yourself. I bought the RokkTech sensor also which I just received. Going to move tone ring(not modify) drive and then install sensor and drive. From what I have read it should get a solid 2-3 MPG gain. Rokktech sensor cost $78 includuing shipping and tax, so even with 2 MPG should pay for itself quickly. These mods should also smooth the power spike at around 2000 RPM, improve low end torq and improve throttle response. I also have about 4600 miles on mine.

Same for me. around 13 in city best was 17 hwy. on two of the tank fulls. I rely more on hand calculations. The overhead has been lower than hand calculations 1/2 mpg in city and 1.5 mpg (low). I have only 2200 now and 65 hours on motor. Today OVD showing 13.3 ,all city this week. waiting for boating season (about 11 more weeks here). Still better than my old 99 suburban.
May have to steal someones trailer to pull something.

I am not sure if this short cut will work but someone on TDR just had their 06 reflashed for hard starting and white smoke and I am not sure if it deals with MPG.

I have not hand checked yet (!), but my overhead shows around 17.2 IN ALL CITY DRIVING. Mine is an '06 2500 2wd quadcab 6 speed, so everything about the truck except the cab size is working for it getting good mileage. It only seems to pick up about a mpg, to 18.5, at a steady 65 mph. Again, this is all according to the overhead. I was seeing these numbers with 200 miles on the truck. It now has a little over 2000, and the numbers have not changed significantly.

I normally check my mileage myself, but due to a plethora of little things, I have not had a chance. Stuff like not having a calculator in the truck, not being the one driving when refueling, etc. I had a driver on the road pulling a fema trailer for me, and though he did not actually calculate the numbers himself, the amount miles he was getting per tank was surprisingly high. (This truck is for sale in the classifieds, as the bottom has dropped out of what we're getting paid per mile to haul the fema trailers.)

Took the truck to the dealer today to check for codes. They said there was a code that indicated that the MAP sensor was not functioning properly. They ordered a MAP sensor and hopefully I will have it replaced in a day or two. Would a faulty MAP sensor cause poor fuel mileage?

Mine is right in there too. 16.2 on the highway, 12.5 in town and all this is easy in town driving and 65mph on highway. (hand calculations by the way)

Sure not like the '03 which was 18 in town and 22 on the highway.

I'd say your about right on with the rest of us.

Yes, a faulty manifold air pressure (boost) sensor can cause poor fuel economy.

However, I can't stess enough that all of you should complain about fuel economy/white smoke. It reallly doesn't take too many complaints to get them to at least put the issue on the list. That doesn't mean it gets fixed right away, but it will eventually get fixed. If you don't tell them about it, it will never get addressed and you will continue to complain about it.

I feel like I'm talking to a wall.
