What's max boost before setting a code?

Has anyone been able to find this information. I'm looking at shimming the waste gate a small amount but I don't know how far I can go with the boost before setting a code.

We finally found something Doug hasn't figured out yet!

Seriously though, good point. With all the after market turbos running around, you would think someone has pegged their boost gauge by accident without their box hooked up.

Yeah, he's becoming a self educated guru on this stuff and personally teaching me a hell of a lot more than I new about diesels in the beginning. On another note, any idea what the defuel point is with increasing boost pressures?

BTW AK RAM,

How are things in Anchorage? I might be back up for the summer. Might as well, I destroyed my new trucks paint on the last trip up and back. One good thing though, since i rubbed the new right off of it I can go ahead and BomB away! With your mods why did you decide to go the manifold & turbo route without a fuel box?

I hear ya. Doug is definitely an asset. Someone over on the pay-per-view site posted that theirs started defueling at around 30. I just finished the break-in period on mine so I haven't had boost over 20 yet. I've been trying to take it easy as to not set codes, but it looks like I may not have to worry about that after all.

Anchorage is typical Anchorage....AWESOME! Just waiting for the weather to warm up. Old man winter has sure held on to his grip this year. We generally see temps in the high 40*'s by now, but this morning it was -4* with not much let-up in sight.

On the mods; just get'n ready. I've been patiently waiting (for quit some time) for the new Edge and Quadzilla boxes to come out so I would have plenty of options. Well, with no boxes and no word to the potential customers on a time frame, I gave up. I ordered my TST box this week. Now it is just sit back and wait for the backorder to catch up to me. I should have a good month or so to work on the "restraint" portion of my brain before it gets here.

What differences are you seeing with the hybrid turbo? Boost, performance, fit, cost. Gimme' some details!!!

Pretty impressive so far, but I can't say on the turbo alone. I added the turbo, ATS manifold, and AFE intake all on the same day. Overall, with all mods considered, I'm one happy camper.

Here's a few numbers I had written down for comparison. I already had exhaust done at this time and road conditions were flat.

Before
65 MPH, EGTs 630
70 MPH, EGTs 620
75 MPH, EGTs 570

After
65 MPH, EGTs 475, Boost 5.2
70 MPH, EGTs 500, Boost 8.5
75 MPH, EGTs 490, Boost 9.8

Not bad huh. I forgot to take boost readings for the "Before." Spool-up is virtually instantaneous as long as I'm not babying it. Decent seat-o-pants gain in low end power. Not so noticeable jumping on it at 75mph. Mileage in town is up 5 mpg, highway is up about 3 mpg. Most of my driving has been in town so far. Piers takes a stock 3rd Gen turbo, machines out the compressor housing, installs a HX40 compressor wheel (bigger & more blades), and puts in better bearings. Since this is done to a stock huffer, fit is not an issue. From the outside, it looks completely stock. Cost is around $350 with a $500 core charge.

My original intention was to get better bearings and a little more air in hopes it would last a while when I plugged the box up. Now that I have ordered the TST, I'm not sure there is anything that can save this turbo. I really don't plan on upgrading the lift pump, so about 5/5, maybe 6/6 is all I will be able to get out of the TST. This turbo should handle that just fine, if not, at least it was cheap.

I will tell you though, the only thing I'm not sure about is this AFE PG7 filter. I can pull my filter minder all the way down to 60% with the AFE pre-filter installed. Took the pre-filter off after work and jumped on it pretty good, and I can still pull it down to about 30% without trying very hard. Wish I could figure out what's up with that. I have been thinking about getting a Donaldson BHAF that will fit the AFE intake housing and see if that is any better. Time will tell.

Awesome information! Thanks for taking the time to post it all. I'm still trying to find a way to use a BHAF myself. I'm still not too happy with oiled filters (have one on my Harley and HATE it). How did you come across the hybrid. I can't find anything on the Piers site about it. What are you seeing for max boost without the box installed?

I've got a few ideas on mounting a BHAF myself. I think I have found one that will fit the space I have in the AFE intake, but I don't think it will flow enough air according to the CFM flow data that I found. It is a little smaller than I would like. My other idea involves ditching the AFE intake all together. I may give that a shot after my vacation this month. If it works, there will be a cheap AFE intake system in the classified section. This is the one I want to run: http://shop.airflowonline.com/Mercha...egory_Code=DCI

On the turbo, just kind of a word of mouth thing so far. I've been talking with Piers to keep track on it's progress for a while. I was finally ready so I got one. They don't have anything about it on the web site yet. I don't think they are ready for what you would call full production. Call the 1-800 number on their web site and ask for info on their 3rd Gen Hybrid turbo. They will tell you all about it.

On edit: I jumped on it today for a few seconds and the X-Monitor recorded 28.9 lbs of boost. That is the highest I have had it to so far. Piers says 36 lbs is it's efficiency cap. At 36 lbs, the turbo will start generating more hot air than cold, although you can take it higher if EGTs allow. I have a boost elbow from Edge in the mail, so it will be capped right at 35 lbs.

Keep me posted. I'm stopping by Spokane this weekend to try a VA box and poke around Air Flow Systems a bit. I'll fit a BHAF in there even if I have to relocate a battery!

Your reaching waaaaaay back.... This thread is over a year old. Poor Richard is contemplating shimming the wastegate on his stock turbo as his first mod for crying out loud. Funny what the search function can turn up.

Anywho, if you have an 04.5 or 05, yeah, that is about the norm with a box. If you have an 03 or 04, no, your gonna break something.

You know how much money I'd have in the bank if I had just stopped right there! Amazing how far you can go in a year once you start sliding down the slope...
