What is Max EGT Before Shutdown?
What is Max EGT Before Shutdown?
So what is the maximum EGT, pre-turbo, it has to get down to before shutting down the engine?
Is there a consensus?
I have been letting it cool to 300 degrees, pre-turbo, but I wonder if enough heat is actually getting out of the turbo shaft in the amount of time it takes to get down to 300 before the turbo.
Am I just being paranoid here?

Then again, I'm running Amsoil, which supposedly won't coke.

When cruising around town, or even on the highway, I am at 700-800, unloaded. The max I've ever been able to get out of it, at WOT, was 1,100. That's pretty good, huh?

Just out of curiosity, what about post turbo?

Thanks,
Chris
Re:What is Max EGT Before Shutdown?
My pyrometer probe is post turbo. Before I ran synthetic oil, if I didn't allow it to cool down to 300, I couldn't hear the turbo spin down after I shut down. Now I can shut down when I've got it parked, EGT can be 400-500 and I can hear it spin down just fine.

I'm usually right around 500 when cruising the highway unloaded. It's never gone over 900 when towing. It gets as low as 200 when I'm deccelerating by downshifting.

As long as you can hear that turbo spool down, I think you're fine. I've heard a turbo make some awful noise on a dino-oiled Detroit 6-71 firetruck after it was shut down immediately after returning from a run and not allowed to cool. Ever since then I've been attentive to hot turbos without any oil pressure.
Re:What is Max EGT Before Shutdown?
Wow, I've never noticed my turbo spinning down. I'll have to listen for that. I would think it would be silent if it was lubed properly. Am I misunderstanding something here?
What should it sound like?

Hey Admin, the ads at the top aren't showing up. This might just be me, but you might want to look into it.

Chris
Re:What is Max EGT Before Shutdown?
Post turbo is only good if your shutting down. 350 I think is max post. I run Delo 400 and I can hear my turbo spool down without any problem. I let my engine cool down to about 320-300 pre turbo. It cools off to 350 quick, but I'd rather it sit a little longer just to be sure. I cruise in third gear at 55mph at 2100rpm unloaded about 500. WOT is 970. Cruising at 70 it is about 650 or so. With the comp completely unplugged (previous temps were with comp plugged in but turned off), I got 1100-1200 WOT, and the rest were the same.
