Whats the better tranny
Acouple friends have been going back and forth with the hole auto vs 6 speed. They mainly bicker about whats faster between the 2 if say they where racing the 1/4 mile and stock to stock what holds up better. I usually keep my nose out of it but I'm just getting tired of hearing about it. So i was wouldering if i could get some info on what people think on this on going problem and if we could some of the pros and cons about the 2 of them?

6-speed without a doubt. I would NEVER own an auto. So much LESS power is lost with a manual than an auto, not to mention it's a 6-speed manual which means more precise gear selection. The only advantage an auto has with a turbo engine is the lack of boost when shifting. This can be compensated however with a good twin turbo setup. These trucks are no different than cars and manual cars are always faster than autos.

With some mods(torque convertor/valve body) the auto would be faster and more consistant.Only RICERS drag manual trans cauise they kinda got to(small engines etc.) But anything with TORQUE racing is most always a auto.

For most towing applications the 6 speed gives a lot of control. For comfort I'd pick the auto. For DRAG racing the auto. What are wanting??? The auto has minor and major upgrades. The minor is torque convertor and valve body.Major is hardened shafts, differant clutch packs, external controls etc.I bet from 2k to 5k in price.Get in touch with SunCoast or DTT or Ats,BDD etc.there is a NUMBER of trans mod vendors.

Contact one of the trans vendors.Ask them and prices.A tighter convertor and valve body will put more power to the ground and it will run cooler(less torque convertor slippage)

If you are towing all the time and it is just you driving then a 6speed is the best. IF you are powering up to anything over 400hp you will need a heavy duty single or double disc clutch.
If their is a driver who doesn't shift driving the auto is the way to go. If you are sledpulling it could go either way. If you are going to the strip (and I don't mean club) then the Auto is 2 seconds faster with the same engine setup. When the 6speeds used to have a longer OD they would get amazing mileage over an auto....For 05's and 06's the mileage difference is much less.
It costs $2500 to 3500 to bombproof a manual and $ 6500 to 10k to bombproof the auto. By bombproof I mean 500hp towing 30k anywhere or 650hp racing. You can do it for less by cutting out some billet shafts and performance won't suffer....only durability. Given what I have now.....if I bought a second truck it would be a 6speed with a short shift and a double disk clutch with clutch pressure boost and a billet shaft. My auto works great for an auto but a 6speed is the best for all round. ks
