But what would happen if you filled your tank with gas by mistake? Lets say 1/4 tank diesel and 3/4 gas.
Would the engine survive if it were run for a while? Would it even run?

the one who have done and from what a mechanic has told me . they run ruff for a second and then quit. diesel explodes under compression and i believe gas needs a spark.

 

Long term damage is not significant if it is identified and drained promptly. The gasoline will ignite under compression but is not as stable as the diesel fuel and will not burn smoothly, causing the rough running of the engine.

Some dealers will tell you that you have to replace your entire fuel system to correct a gasoline incident as it will damage the injection pump and the injectors. If you search on here you will find that most just drain the tank fill it with diesel, purge to the filter and add 2 stroke oil to the tank and into the filter. Purge to a few injectors and then start it.

It will run rough but once the gasoline is purged all should be well.

 

It could caused damage because the gas will ignite much sooner then the diesel causing the motor to detonate. The pistons will still be travling upwards in thier strock when the gas goes off. This will cause a ton of stress to the lower end of the motor and possibly break or bend componants. Gas does not need a sprk to ignite. It needs heat. So a spark plug or hi compression will give it what it needs. That is why they sell differant heat ranged plugs for differant types of fuel.

 

As I understand it, a full tank of gas isn't likely to cause damage, because the thing doesn't run or doesn't run well and the problem gets identified and fixed.

Part of a tank mixed with dsl, though, can apparently damage the injection pump, but it depends on how long it was run like that. My guess would be the VP44 trucks would be more likely to have pump damage.

 

i know a girl that blew the motor up on her husbands 2 week old Duramax because she put gas in it. If it runs it runs long enough to ruin the motor, at least in thier case it did.

 

I had a buddy that put 5 Gal in his truck so he put in QT of 50 weight oil and a Gal of cooking oil and he had no trouble with his Eng.

 

ive experienced this first hand in a Bastrop,tx gas station. their diesel tank had more than 70% unleaded the fuel delivery truck had put gas in the diesel container. I was on my way back from my brothers house and it ran rough and smoked white and grey out the exhaust, ran about 14 miles until it lost power took it in to benny boyd dealer and they flushed the fuel system out truck ran fine and warranty wasnt voided. gas stations fault. that happend when truck had 7k it know has 45k and no problems yet. dont want to jinx myself

 

I know that a brand new 06 CTD will run horrible after the dealership fills it 7/8 full of gas. But it did run.

 

I have seen this happen twice...
Once my boss' son filled the company Hummer H1 with gasoline then drove 10 miles till the engine quit. In this case the entire engine was replaced, but I don't know specifically what was damaged.

On the second time, my friend's camper (a converted school bus) was incorrectly filled (~2/3 tank) with gas at a station that only offered full-service. The attendant simply didn't recognize that the bus was a diesel. Anyway, it started and drove the 25 or so miles to our campsite in the middle of the Nevada dessert but then wouldn't re-start once it was cold. The solution was to pump out all the gas into a 55gal drum, re-fill with diesel and then crack the fuel line at the injectors to push out the gas from the lines. Once the engine got a dose of pure #2 she fired right up. It doesn't appear that any damage was done.

I think this sorta' thing falls into the "do not try at home" category.

 

bansh-eman your thinking of diesel in gas. Diesel ignites at a lower temperature then gas and because it has free flow into the cylinders it will combust midway through the compression stroke. Gas cant pre combust in a diesel because it cant get into the cylinder until injected. The problems with gas is a lack of lubrication and difference in ignition temperature etc.
