I am noticing that some of the posts state that their oil still appears clear or at least not pitch black for many miles. Of these engines, how many are 04.5 or 05s? My 04.5s oil is black almost immediatly....and yes, that is with a filter change at the same time.
It also seems (maybe coincidence) that the syn. oils stay clean longer....imput please.
Thanks.

My oil turns black immediatly, I have been running rotella 15w40 for 15k. After I hit 20K i will be running a single bypass from amsoil with their 15w40 synthetic.

Only one my second oil change (first was at the deal for free, so I guess they used Mopar stuff) but I put Rotella-T 15W40 in the engine. I will do so for at least the next oil change, and we'll see how things go. I don't really see the need to spend the coin on full synthetic since I'm gonna change it every 7500 anyway.

I use Valvoline Premium Blue with Fleetguard Stratopore filters. I have purchased it at Cummins shop, NAPA, and Schuks Auto Parts. My first purchase was at Cummins in ND and guy said only a few of his customers there used Extreme and then only in the winter if I recall correctly. ND is a place where it would really make a difference as it does get a bit chilly in the winter.

Changed to Amsoil 15W-40 at 27,000 miles. Will keep oil for 15,000 miles changing filter at 5,000 mile intervals. Had oil change done, drove 2 miles to house and oil was black.
